Two Parkland golfers competed in last week’s District 11 Championship qualifying tournament and both advanced to this week’s district championship.
Trojan sophomore AJ Sundstrom shot 80 at the qualifier, which was held at Olde Homestead Golf Course. He placed third in the event in which the top half of the 35-player field advances to the championship.
Sundstrom made 11 pars, six bogeys and one double bogey on the par-72 layout. He played his first nine (the course’s back nine) in 2-over par 38 by making four straight pars while parring seven of his first eight holes. The double bogey came on his final hole, the par 3 ninth.
Trojan teammate Mujtaba Jaffer also advanced to the championship. The senior carded an 83 to finish in a tie for 10th place.
Jaffer matched his teammate with a 38 on his first nine holes, making seven pars with bogeys coming on his fifth and eighth holes. He was just three over par before making a quadruple bogey on his 15th hole and following it with a double and a bogey on his next two before parring the last. Sundstrom and Jaffer will be joined at districts by teammates Landen Benner and Chloe Chase, who both qualified based on their performance at the East Penn Conference tournament and were exempt from the qualifier.
The District 11 Championship was held Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Steel Club. See next week’s Press for more about that event.
