LHS field hockey clinches a berth
Liberty might have waited till the final week of the regular season to clinch a district berth, but the Hurricanes look locked in for the field hockey postseason.
After losing five of their last six contest coming into the week, Liberty (7-8-1, 6-5-1) had a regular season finale against Freedom on Tuesday, past Press deadlines.
No matter the result, Liberty will have at least a .500 record in conference play, punching their ticket to districts.
They also came into the week seventh in the EPC standings, as the top eight schools qualify for the league playoffs. A win over Freedom on Tuesday should have been enough to clinch a spot in the tournament, which most likely gets underway this weekend. Liberty would most likely see one of the top three seeds in the conference in the EPC opener, which would be either Emmaus (16-1), Parkland (14-1) or Easton (13-2).
The Hurricanes have had to ride the injury wave over the past month, as head coach Jill Dorn has tried to navigate some major losses.
“The last month has been an interesting ride,” said Dorn. “We were one hundred percent injury free and then during pregame of our first Whitehall contest, we had two very talented players- Tula Sobrinski and Malia Lockhart, knock their heads together and we lost them for that game, which changed our dynamics a little. We’ve also since lost Ellis Corr, our leading scorer, to a knee injury and she’ll miss the remainder of the season.
“For as much as we have progressed in individual spots, we have sort of restructured our offense, trying to locate some players to be an offensive spark, which was a huge part of Ellis’ contribution.
Freedom’s ship on the postseason appears to have sailed, as the Patriots (6-9-1) won’t finish .500 in the league or overall regardless of their result against Liberty. With 10 teams in the District 11 3A classification, a minimum of half the teams (five) qualify for the postseason. With six teams clinched already coming into the week, plus the addition of Liberty, Freedom finds themselves on the outside looking in.
Bethlehem Catholic (2-14) wraps up their season on Thursday against Freedom.
