Boys soccer team has clinched postseason spots

The Northwestern Lehigh boys soccer team picked up sweet 16 in the win column Monday night with a 3-0 win over Pine Grove in a nonleague game, leaving the Tigers’ overall record at 16-0-0 while their Colonial League mark is 11-0-0.

The win was their second straight win in a nonleague game after they beat Upper Perkiomen 2-1 on Saturday.

Northwestern Lehigh has wrapped up the top seed in the Colonial League playoffs and will play its final league game against Catasauqua this week. The top two seeds in the league receive a first-round bye giving, them a little extra time to prepare for the postseason.

The Tigers are currently also the top seed in the 2A classification for districts, but league champions receive top seeding in the District 11 tournament. They also stand as the only remaining undefeated team in District 11 with two games to play against Catty and the regular season finale against Hazleton.

The wins give Northwestern Lehigh 100 goals this season, and the Tigers have now allowed just seven goals to their opponents.

Senior Matt Johnson reset the school’s career records for goals and points and is closing in on the assists record of 56 in a career, currently standing at 50. With the two regular season games and at least a couple postseason games, Johnson is poised to reach the 100-goal career mark as he needs just eight goals to reach the milestone.

Juniors Jack Mauro and Jake van Lierop are next among the team’s goal scorers with 16 and 15, respectively. Mauro’s goal mark is one shy of his 17 goals over his first two seasons, while van Lierop has surpassed his career total of 13 goals in just this season.

In goal, junior Brandon Krapf has 11 shutouts on the season and is allowing 0.4 goals per game for Northwestern Lehigh.
