Boyle first for boys

Liberty’s cross country team celebrated Senior Night after their meet with Bethlehem Catholic and Freedom, racing against Parkland and William Allen, on Oct. 3 at Louise Moore Park in Easton.

Spencer Sabo had been the lone senior for the Hurricane boys until Jacob Rivera recently joined the team.

“A lot of my friends who were on the team last year got me to where I am now, so it’s been rough without them, but they set me up for where I’m at right now,” said Sabo, who placed 15th with a time of 18:58. “The first mile I went out really fast. I was with Parkland for a long time; probably about five of them, and what I was trying to do was pass them. I did get up front for awhile, and then they just took off, and there was nothing I could do about it. There was a Freedom kid behind me who was getting close to me at the end, so I started to pick it up and hope he didn’t pass me, and he didn’t. I was pretty happy with what I did, considering the heat and the conditions today, I think it went well.”

Freedom’s Ryan Parkin came in behind Sabo at 19:06 followed by Bethlehem Catholic’s Timothy Kraus at 19:11.

Freedom’s Dylan Boyle emerged as the winner of the boys race for his fourth straight tri-meet victory of the season with a time of 16:59.

Parkland’s Ethan Willard (17:14), Paul Abeln (17:15), Jake Barns (17:25), and Tyler Rothrock (17:58) followed.

Freedom’s Brayden Boyle placed sixth (18:05), and rounding out the top 10 were Parkland’s Marcelo Castilla (18:10), Luke McEvoy (18:24), Brycen Smith (18:30), and Ethan Vandecaster (18:38).

Bethlehem Catholic’s Mekhi Britt was 11th (18:40), Freedom’s Ryan Haas came in 12th (18:40), Parkland’s Jorge Rinker was 13th (18:54), and Parkland’s Finnegan Jenkins-Ford placed 14th (18:54), followed by Sabo (18:58).

“Spencer has emerged as a great leader for our team,” said Liberty coach Kevin Bush. “Same with our girls, Katelyn (Mast) and Rhianna (Eppler) and Briana (Bean). They all bring something different. They’re great kids, leading by example and keeping everybody’s confidence up.”
