The Northwestern golf team finished its season Tuesday at the District 11 Championships.
The Tigers took second place as a team in Class 2A, finishing behind champ Moravian Academy.
“We brought a team of five here plus two others for a total of seven players competing in the district championship,” said head coach Tim Miller. “Very good year this year. The kids did wonderful.”
Two Tigers earned district medals with top five finishes at the event as Avri Chandler finished fourth in the 2A girls tournament and teammate Gracie Scheffler took fifth place.
Chandler, a sophomore, shot 97 at districts, which were held at The Steel Club in Hellertown. Scheffler shot 101 in the tournament, while teammate Addison Remaley took ninth place with a 109.
Moravian Academy’s Mara Dubacher won the girls tournament with a 6-over par 78, 13 shots ahead of Marla Freiwald (Blue Mountain) in second place.
In the boys tournament, the Tigers’ Ethan Kozlowski finished eight overall with a 92, while teammate Erik Mather tied for 11th place at 95.
Two other Northwestern players were part of the team tournament but were did not qualify for the individual tournament. Freshman Cole Dynda’s 87 was the top score for Northwestern and best among 2A players who were not part of the individual championship.
Senior Stone Sosnovik finished just two shots behind Dynda with an 89.
Northwestern went 10-3 this season and made the district team tournament for the first time since 2014.
“The kids really bought into understanding you can’t let your golf team go and two weeks before the season starts up you try to get rolling,” said Miller. “I was kind of hard on them about spending time (on their game) and they bought into it and they’re seeing the results. I’m confident we’re going to take another step next year.”
The Tigers graduate three seniors in Mather, Kozlowski and Sosnovik from the district tournament team, but Scheffler and Chandler are both sophomores while Remaley is a junior. Dynda will have three more years of high school golf.
