Setting an example

Let’s meet Jasmine Schuster-Neumann. She is a fourth-generation Coplay Borough firefighter and spends some time with the North Catasauqua department as well.

She is following in the boots of her great-uncle “Buddy” Santee, retired grandfather Ron Hacker and her proud parents, Cheryl and Mark Schuster, of Coplay.

Schuster-Neumann said she has dreamed of being a firefighter since the age of 14.

“Hard work, perseverance and continuing to take all kinds of classes,” she said, have helped to put her in the driver’s seat of Engines 541 or 511 in Coplay 14 years later.

She started out as what was known as a junior firefighter at Han-Le-Co Fire Company. She then climbed the ladder and moved to the North Catasauqua department before heading across the bridge to Coplay. She still continues to volunteer with North Catasauqua every chance she gets.

Schuster-Neumann holds a unique dual designation of being a cross-trained firetruck driver and certified paramedic/driver for eight years.

She said her favorite thing as a firefighter is the ability to participate in public events.

She prides herself on setting an example that any female can make it as a firefighter, she said.
