Young players net field hockey goals

Surprisingly, there are only five games remaining on the regular season schedule for the Salisbury field hockey team. The past week saw the Falcons play two games, beating Saucon Valley in one game and losing in overtime to Bangor in the other.

Sarah Beckage continued her hot streak with two goals in a 4-0 shutout over Saucon Valley (1-6-2, 2-7-2) last week. Beckage, a sophomore, combined with classmates Gwyn DeFazio and Emma Yakaitis to score the four goals as young players continue to stay hot for the Lady Falcons.

Against Bangor (6-3-1, 6-3-1), senior Bailee Neitz picked up a goal as the two teams ended regulation tied 1-1. In overtime, Bangor’s Ana Jones got the golden goal for the Slaters as they picked up the 2-1 win.

The five remaining games are all against Colonial League opponents and will be key in determining the playoff bracket in the league. To make the postseason, a team either has to win its division or be one of the top three non-division winners in the team.

The Falcons (4-4-1 Colonial, 6-6-1 overall) have the unenviable draw of being in the same division as Southern Lehigh (10-0-0, 10-1-0) and are unlikely to catch the Lady Spartans for the division title, although the two teams do play in the season finale. For a wild card spot, Salisbury is fourth and will need to climb ahead one place to make the postseason.

The Falcons have remaining games against two teams that they trail for a wild card berth. Moravian Academy (5-3-0) and Wilson (6-4-1) are on the schedule and just ahead of Salisbury.

In the fight for a spot in districts, four teams from Class 2A make the bracket and Salisbury is currently ranked fifth. The Lady Falcons could also qualify by finishing with a record at or over .500 in either the league or overall.

The remaining schedule has teams with a combined league record of 24-21-2 and a combined overall record of 25-26-2, meaning there are some winnable games along the way for Salisbury.

The records are balanced out by Southern Lehigh’s 10-0-0, 10-1-0 record and Palisades 0-10-0, 0-12-0 record. The other remaining games are against Pen Argyl (3-4-1, 4-5-1), Moravian Academy (5-3-0, 5-3-0), and Wilson (6-4-1, 6-5-1). The Falcons have not played Pen Argyl, Moravian or Wilson yet this season. They beat Palisades and lost to Southern Lehigh earlier.
