Remaley, Chandler tie for top spot at tournament
Three Northwestern Lehigh golfers entered Tuesday’s District 11 Championship qualifying tournament and all three advanced to next week’s main event.
All three players were part of a girls field that included eight golfers. They needed to shoot 110 or lower to make it to next week’s District 11 Class 2A Championships.
They finished in three of the top four places at the Tigers’ Addison Remaley and Avri Chandler shot 97 to tie for first place in the girls 2A field, while teammate Gracie Scheffler shot 103 to advance.
The qualifier was played at Northwestern’s home course, Olde Homestead. But after three days of rain and more falling during the tournament, conditions played more difficult than during the regular season.
“It wasn’t my best and the conditions were rough,” said Chandler, who had an 80 on the course during the regular season. “But I just tried to do my best and make it to next week.”
Remaley battled through the conditions to make the championship field.
“It was cold, but everything was kind of working for me, “ said the Northwestern junior.
Remaley knew that shooting a 110 would enable her to move on to the next round. “That’s what I was shooting for,” she said about the cutoff number that she easily went under.
The best shot of the day for the gals came when Northwestern’s Scheffler holed one out from about 85 yards on hole 15.
“I hit my pitching wedge,” she said about the shot. “It was definitely my best shot of the day.”
Scheffler placed fourth overall.
Northwestern’s Erik Mather and Ethan Kozlowski were exempt from the qualifying tournament because they finished in the top five at last week’s league tournament.
All five Tigers will tee it up Tuesday at Steel Club in Bethlehem in the district championship tournament. The top three girls and top six boys finishers next Tuesday will advance to the state championship tournament at Penn State University.
