Hornets post 10 straight shutouts

Following the season opener back on August 26, a 3-1 nonconference defeat at Cumberland Valley, the Emmaus High School boys soccer team went on a streak that saw them beat each team via shutout. Last week, the Green Hornets defeated both Dieruff and Easton late in the week in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action to extend their win streak to 10 in a row, and in those 10 games, they have not been scored on.

Head coach John Cari reflected on the streak, which has been one of the best that he’s been a part of in his time as head coach of the program, which dates almost 20 seasons.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to do defensively,” said Cari. “Most have been pretty unaware that we’ve gone 10 straight games without letting one in. The back line has been more than solid. I have some really talented players back there.

“Preston Eshelman is returning all-conference player. Brayden Dang is a third team All-EPC player as a sophomore last year.”

Alongside those two veteran defenders are some varsity newcomers.

“Our two new faces weren’t even with us last year,” said Cari. “Dahlin Allport is a big center back. He’s done a really good job of helping protect that back line. Eli Pennell is coming off an MLS last season and really understands what we want to try to do. Callum Harvey in front of them understands what it takes defensively. He was starting with us last year as a sophomore.

“Colin Wilson, our goalkeeper, has been outstanding. We thought he would go under the radar without people knowing him. He’s also a pretty good baseball player and he’s getting looks [from college coaches] for baseball. He’s incredibly athletic. He does a really good job taking control and commanding what we want. We’ve named him one of our captain because we feel he’s just been outstanding with his work ethic, his great attitude, and play on the field.”

Last Friday at home against the Huskies, Emmaus netted two goals in the first half and another one in the second. Dahlin Allport, Ryan Kiernan and Elijah Miller were the goal scorers and Mohamed Hassanali contributed an assist. Emmaus had a 17-0 advantage in shots, 9-0 on goal, and led 11-1 in corner kicks. Wilson was not forced into action.

The next morning at the Red Rovers, the Green Hornets extended a 1-0 halftime lead with four second-half goals. Marcus Puentes, Ethan Ervin, Kiernan, Kai Mattern and Ethan Dublin all found the back of the net. Kiernan and Elijah Daly both had an assist. Wilson finished with two saves and Emmaus outshot Easton 16-4 overall and 8-2 on goal with an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Green Hornets are currently 10-1-1 overall, 10-0-1 in the conference. They tied Northampton this past Monday, play at Freedom Wednesday and host Pocono Mountain West Saturday morning.
