Golfers compete in league tournament
The Emmaus golf team finished its regular season and began postseason play last week.
The Hornets competed in last Monday’s East Penn Conference Championships at Olde Homestead before playing their final two dual matches, beating Freedom but falling in a nonleague match against Southern Lehigh.
Senior Noah Schurman led the Emmaus at the league tournament, shooting 6-over par 78 to finish in sixth place overall.
Sophomore Kyan DeLong shot 81 to tie for 13th place at leagues, while senior Zach Yenawine shot 82 for 16th place. Freshman Evan Walters carded an 88 in his first league tournament to give the Hornets a team score of 329, which was good for fourth place behind Northampton (317), Nazareth (328) and Parkland (328).
Stroudsburg’s Hunter Probst won this year’s boys individual title with an even-par 72, beating Northampton’s Gavin Pychinka by two strokes. Northampton’s Camryn Hoff won the girl tournament with an 85, three shots better than Parkland’s Chloe Chase in second place.
Emmaus’ Maya Schultz shot 94 for fifth place in the girls tournament.
The Hornets lost 406-416 to Southern Lehigh last Tuesday at Brookside Country Club. Walters led Emmaus with a 78, followed by teammates Yenawine (82), Josh Teichman (84), Schurman (86) and DeLong (86).
The Spartans’ David Burmeister shot the lowest round of the match with a 77, while teammate Colin Sarnoski shot 78.
The Hornets finished the season at 13-3 overall and 13-2 in EPC play after last Thursday’s 419-423 win over Freedom.
Walters shot 78 against Freedom, while Schurman (80), DeLong (85), Yenawine (87) and Teichman (89) rounded out the team scoring for Emmaus. The Patriots were led by Nick Hoffman (80).
DeLong, Walters, Yenawine and Schultz qualified to play in Tuesday’s District 11 Championship qualifier, which was held at Olde Homestead after Press deadline. See next week’s Press for results.
The three boys players will have to finish in the top 18 places to move on to next week’s district championship tournament. Schultz needs to shoot 110 or lower to advance to the girls championship.
Schurman is exempt from district qualifying as a returning state qualifier.
The District 11 Championship will be held Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Steel Club in Hellertown.
