Liberty’s Lynn, Zheng win silver at EPC tournament

Liberty’s singles tennis players Helena Lynn and Stephanie Zheng were silver medalists at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tennis Championships on Sept. 28 at Freedom High School.

Lynn faced Parkland’s Lexie Warsing in the final at No. 1 singles that went to tiebreak, 10-9 (7-2).

“She served really well, and she played really well. I think she came out really aggressive and moving me around. It took awhile for me to get used to that,” Lynn said. “Definitely the 10 straight games is difficult because you don’t have much time to figure things out. I just tried to make less unforced errors. I tried to mix it up. I tried to go on offense because she was moving me around, and I tried to do my best to play more offense, but that also caused me to hit more errors.”

Earlier in the day, Lynn defeated Whitehall’s Sonakshi Sharma, 8-0, and Pocono Mountain East’s Elizabeth Trott, 10-1.

At No. 2 singles, Zheng took on Easton’s Suhani Makwana, who won the final, 10-3.

“She made no mistakes. She was moving me forward and back, so she was in control a lot of the time,” Zheng said. “I felt like I was better at getting power behind my shots and staying in the game.”

Zheng defeated Parkland’s Sophie Elijovich, 8-1, in the semifinal and East Stroudsburg South’s Julia Kaczmarska, 8-4 in the quarterfinal.

“[Julia] played really nicely. She was always getting balls back,” said Zheng. “I just figured to be more consistent and a little more risky with my shots. I would put more power behind my shots and hit it lower.”

At No. 3 singles, Stroudsburg’s Alison Willis was the EPC champion, defeating Parkland’s Sophia Petrocelli.

In doubles play, Parkland’s Aarohi Vaze and Kiera Miles won the EPC gold medal over Allentown Central Catholic’s Catherine Grubb and Tori Temple at No. 2.

At No. 3 doubles, Parkland’s Ali Silman and Kiana Miles topped Emmaus’s Cece Coleman and Josie Jackson for the championship.

Liberty’s Angela Schray and Corinne Mumma played in the consolation final at No. 4 doubles, but lost to Central’s Ellie Sweterlitsch and Maggie Lynch.

The Hurricane duo defeated Freedom’s Daniela Guzzo and Viola Avitabile, 8-5, in the quarterfinal before dropping their semifinal match to Parkland’s Riley Zangari and Belle Mattson, 3-10.
