Liberty gaining momentum after a tough week on the courts
Liberty bounced back from their two game losing streak with a resounding week of wins to get their train back on track.
The Hurricanes (12-2) topped East Stroudsburg North, Dieruff and Wilson West Lawn last week to ease the sting of back-to-back losses to Central Catholic and Parkland they suffered.
Head coach Connor Swigart was glad to see the team respond, buoyed by individual performances that Swigart hopes to continually see down the road.
“We have had some players really step up their efforts the last few weeks that have helped us,” said Swigart. “Hannah D’Angelo has been very good as an outside for us and found ways to score when we felt stuck. Malena Sabol has taken on more of the offensive load and has given blockers fits. Shawna Beatty coming on after an injury to our starting middle has been a real catalyst.”
The win over Wilson West Lawn might have been the best one of the season for Liberty, as it was a victory over the fifth ranked team in the state, beating them in four games to give them a shot of confidence.
“When it comes down to it we have not played our best as of yet and the girls have had a positive perspective about it,” Swigart said. “We want to be playing our best as playoffs are coming and we hope to be ready for that. Our captains, Angelica Santana, Lora Flynn, Gianna Sciarra and Bailey Corrigan, have set the course for the team this year and when we are stuck they help guide us out of it. Being able to beat Wilson West Lawn was a good boost to our confidence that we can beat good teams even if we aren’t playing our best. Good teams and athletes find a way to be successful, despite the circumstances. While we haven’t reached our peak as of yet, the kids work hard each day and that is something we can rely on to carry us as playoffs are around the corner.”
Liberty continued their momentum on Monday night with a win over Bethlehem Catholic and close out the week against Easton (10-3), as they look to stay on pace for one of the top four spots in the EPC playoff race.
The Becahi loss puts the Hawks at 6-7 on the season, as they’ve lost three straight matches now. The Hawks will try to stop their skid on Wednesday with a showdown against Nazareth (10-4).
Freedom (6-7) lost to Pleasant Valley and Nazareth last week, as they will battle to the end of the season for a district berth, needing to finish .500 in the league or overall. The Pates have Easton, Dieruff (5-10) and Trinity this week.
