Hawks suffer first loss; FHS wins, LHS falls

Bethlehem Catholic’s undefeated run in the East Penn Conference came to an end last week following a 10-0 shutout at Emmaus.

On a night where consistent light rain permeated throughout, the Golden Hawks could never get their offense going, as Emmaus limited them to 84 yards of total offense with only 29 yards through the air.

Head coach Tyler Ward praised the effort of his team and placed the blame on his shoulder for walking off the field with a shutout defeat.

“They did everything they needed to do to win the game,” said Ward. “I have to do a better job of getting us to finish. It’s something that we’ll fix moving forward. I think when we watch film we’ll see there were some open routes we didn’t hit or recognize sooner that could have opened things up, but credit to Emmaus because when we got behind the sticks they did a good job of heating us up and bringing pressure.”

Becahi (5-1) will have a chance to wipe away any sorrow from last week’s showing when they host Freedom (2-4) Saturday night in a showdown that can determine the city championship.

The Hawks already defeated Liberty earlier in the season and a win on Saturday would give them the keys to the city crown.

Freedom (2-4) ended a four-game losing streak with a 7-0 win over East Stroudsburg South last week. Chase Walker’s 26-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Colon with 7:50 left in the first quarter were the only points of the night in a surprisingly low scoring contest.

Saturday’s matchup will be an interesting showdown between both schools, as the Pates need to keep winning for their playoff lives and Becahi looks to bounce back before they run into the gauntlet of Parkland, Nazareth and Central Catholic in the final three weeks of the regular season.

“Sometimes it’s ok to get smacked in the mouth, but the question is what are we going to do about it now,” said Ward. “We have a huge game this week and I’m excited to see how our guys are going to respond. I want us to stay together as a family and be hungry for success. If we stay together and work hard, good things will keep coming for this group.”

Liberty (2-4) dropped their fourth straight game of the season with a 21-13 road loss at Easton last week. The Hurricanes endured a tough night, as they were primed to take a 13-7 lead into halftime following an 18-yard touchdown pass by James Parham to Jake Pukszyn with 54 seconds left in the first half.

Unfortunately, Easton quarterback Cole Ordway would throw a 39-yard Hail Mary in the end zone only to have Jasir Frutchey bring it down for the score with a second left on the clock to take a 14-13 lead. Easton was able to hold on the second half, capitalized by a 23-yard touchdown pass by Ordway to Andrew Biddle in the fourth quarter. Liberty now hosts Central Catholic on Friday night.
