Shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 injured

Two short weeks after a double homicide rocked nearby North Catasauqua, Northampton investigators and residents are contending with their own violent crime scene.

Just after 11:30 a.m. Sept. 30, the Northampton Borough Police Department responded to a report of gunshots at a residence in the 300 block of East Ninth Street. There, first responders discovered a deceased male and an injured female, both with gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the Pennsylvania State Police.

The female, identified as a 51-year-old, of Northampton, was transported by Northampton Regional EMS to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Bethlehem.

The Press is not printing her name because the incident, according to state police, is being investigated as an attempted homicide and suicide.

The male, identified as Burt Robert Schutt, 53, of Northampton, was pronounced dead at the scene 12:52 p.m. by the Northampton County Coroner’s Office.

According to state police, Schutt and the injured female were previously boyfriend and girlfriend. The female is reportedly in stable condition and cooperating with the investigation, being led by the Pennsylvania State Police Troop M Major Case Team.

A Smith and Wesson M&P 380 handgun was found at the scene, police said, adding investigators determined that firearm was used in the incident.

The area around the crime scene, specifically Ninth Street between Northampton and Siegfried avenues, was closed Sept. 30 while authorities conducted an investigation.

Investigators reported there was no threat to the public regarding this incident.

Assisting the Troop M Major Case Team is the Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Troop M Collision Analysis Reconstruction Specialist Unit, Northampton County Coroner’s Office, Northampton Regional EMS and the Northampton, North Catasauqua and Coplay borough police departments.

The case remains under investigation, state police said.
