Grace Lutheran Church, 28 W. Main St., Macungie, will host a free apple harvest festival 1-4 p.m. Enjoy free hot dogs, popcorn, apple pie, ice cream, drinks, free games and prizes for children, face painting and a cake walk. Donate one nonperishable food item to receive one free raffle ticket for the basket raffle. All food donations will be given to the Grace Food Cupboard distribution, held 2-4 p.m. every Wednesday for residents of the East Penn School District. The Vera Cruz Fire Department will host an open house 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the fire station, 4093 Main Road West, Vera Cruz. Highlights of the day will include station tours, opportunities to meet and chat with volunteer firefighters and see fire equipment up close.

The Longswamp Township Historical Society will host a free event (rain or shine) in the Longswamp Township Park, 1112 State St., Mertztown. The event will celebrate its recent acquisition of a 1941 Reading Company cupola caboose and there will be a ceremonial groundbreaking for a future museum and historical library building that will be operated by the LTHS. The caboose was installed in the Longswamp Park June 22 and will serve as an ancillary museum structure. The museum/library building will be located nearby. Fall festival at the Wescosville Log House and garden, 2-4 p.m. will feature the corn sheller from the museum and a cider press (weather permitting). They will have a sack of ears of dried corn so youngsters can have fun stripping kernels off the cobs in the sheller; a supply of apples will be available to be pressed into cider.

Oct. 9

Upper Milford Fire Department, 6341 Chestnut St., Zionsville, will host a takeout chicken barbecue dinner 3 to 6 p.m. Tickets are available through the fire company website, from firefighters and at the time of meal pickup. Dinner includes 1/2 barbecue chicken, 1/2 baked potato, applesauce and a roll. Buy your ticket early to make sure you secure a plate. Oct. 10

Taste Fries Rebellion beer at Rising River Brewing, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; owner Ron Beitler is making a special beer as a fundraiser for the Fries Rebellion movie. An anonymous donor will match the first $2,000 raised.

Oct. 14

Greater Lehigh Valley Writers’ Group will hold “Story Shrink,” a one-day workshop for authors ready to develop three critical elements for marketing a book - synopsis, pitch and logline - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. online via Zoom. Kathryn Craft, developmental editor with WritingPartner.com, will lead the workshop. The morning consists of a half-day intensive session where attendees will learn how to write a synopsis, shrink it down to a pitch, and shrink the pitch down to a one-sentence logline that begs interest. The afternoon will be 15-minute, one-on-one sessions with Craft. Registration is limited to only eight slots for the afternoon session. There is a cost for each session. The Upper Milford Youth Association, will host a Halloween Trick or Treat-Fun at the Park event at Lenape Park, 6102 Kings Highway South, Zionsville, starting 3 p.m. Highlights will include a decorating contest, a 50/50 raffle, games, food and prizes.

Nov. 1

The Macungie Institute, 510 E. Main St., Macungie, will host a wine and cheese gathering 6:30 p.m. There is a cost for tickets and space is limited. Tickets area available at the institute 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Ticket purchase is by check.

Dec. 4

A free holiday luncheon for Macungie borough residents 70 years and older will be held at the Macungie Institute, 510 E. Main St. Seating is limited and reservations must be made by Nov. 3. Call 610-966-7830 to RSVP.
