Board votes to replace high school chillers for $1.1 million

Two chillers at Northampton Area High School are being replaced.

Northampton Area School District Board of Education voted 9-0, at the Sept. 11 meeting, to approve $1,147,624 for Trane U.S. Inc. to replace two chillers at the school.

Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning chillers cool water or other fluids to provide air conditioning in buildings.

In other business at the Sept. 11 meeting, school directors voted 9-0 to approve the following.

• Five-year service contract with Lutron Services Company Inc. for on-site and remote response time for trouble shooting, preventive maintenance, system optimization, reports, on-site training and support that includes 100% Lutron parts for Northampton Area Middle School lighting system at $6,579.97 annually, Sept. 30-Oct. 31, 2028

• Contract between NASD and Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 for remedial instruction in reading and math to nonproficient students in qualifying nonpublic schools at $26,205 and $265 for parent involvement programming. The Colonial IU-20 administrative service fee is 3% of the total amount. Costs for instruction and parent involvement programming is covered by the 2023-24 Title I grant.

• Contract with Substitute Teacher Services for instructors for homebound and instruction in home services

• Contract revision with Aramark Educational Services LLC to provide breakfast service for the 2023-24 school year

• Revised policies for adoption - board policy 830: security of computerized personal information, breach notification; board policy 830.1: data governance, storage, security and change policy number of policy 830, reporting use of force, to policy 830.2, reporting use of force. Copies of policies are on the NASD website under board of education Sept. 11 agenda (policy).

• Professional status and tenure for teachers who completed three years of teaching and have received six satisfactory evaluations: Borough Elementary School, Ashten Oswald; George Wolf Elementary School, Rachel Olm; Moore Elementary School, Kimberly Haupt; and NAMS, Matthew Durich

• Vincent Gonsalves, girls lacrosse head coach, effective for the 2023-24 school year, at $8,605; Alexander Skrapits, long-term substitute chemistry teacher, NAHS, effective retroactive to Aug. 21 through Feb. 7, 2024, at prorated $58,855 annual salary; Nicholas Farnham, technology technician, effective Sept. 25, at $30.03 per hour with benefits; Jacqueline Fehnel, special education instructional assistant, NAMS, effective Oct. 1, at $18.88 per hour with benefits; Cory Buskirk, school crossing guard, Aug. 28 through the 2023-24 school year, at $18 per hour with no benefits; and Trisha Norton, cafeteria monitor, Moore Elementary, effective retroactive to Aug. 28, at $18.63 per hour

The board voted 7-2, also at the Sept. 11 meeting, to approve the NASD level comprehensive plan, to be implemented Oct. 31 through June 30, 2026. School board Directors Kim Bretzik and Doug Vaughn cast the two no votes.
