Classical View: “‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’ in Concert” has podium time again with Allentown Symphony Orchestra at PPL Center

“Star Wars” strikes again with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra.

“‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’ in Concert,” with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra accompanying the movie, will be presented 7:30 p.m. Oct. 6, PPL Center, Allentown.

“Star Wars: A New Hope in Concert,” with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra accompanying the movie, was presented May 20 in PPL Center, Allentown.

The screening of the entire film with Oscar-winning composer John Williams’ complete musical score will be performed live to the film. The orchestra will be conducted by Thiago Tiberio.

At Disney’s request, Tiberio has conducted “Star Wars Live in Concert” in France, Portugal and Brazil.

“We are very excited to be bringing the ‘Star Wars’ film, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ to the PPL Center with the Allentown Symphony,” says Diane Wittry, ASO Music Director and Conductor.

“Normally, you would have to drive to Philadelphia or New York for this type of production,” continues Wittry.

“The Allentown Symphony will perform the film score live, while the movie is shown on a very large screen above the orchestra.

“When we did this type of concert last year, it was so exciting and the audience loved hearing the music performed live by our wonderful orchestra,” says Wittry.

Adds Al Jacobsen, Allentown Symphony Association Executive Director, “Following our successful presentation of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ in May 2022, the Allentown Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to be continuing the ‘Star Wars’ saga at the PPL Center with ‘The Empire Strikes Back.’

“Last year, we received enthusiastic feedback about how amazing the Allentown Symphony Orchestra sounded,” continues Jacobsen.

“Audience members said it was just like the music in the original film and often more noticeable since the volume of the music in the film is often turned down below the dialogue and sound effects,” says Jacobsen.

Tiberio is a specialist in live music synchronization to film, having led orchestras in scoring sessions during most of his career. He has arranged, orchestrated and directed concert adaptations of a variety of films, including “Love Actually,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Goonies.”

Tiberio’s classical, operatic and film music career includes work with orchestras in the United States, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Turkey, Bulgaria, South Korea, China and Brazil.

His awards include an Emmy, a Luso-Brazilian Award from the United Nations and an International Brazilian Press Award.
