LHS volleyball suffers a pair of losses
Liberty’s unblemished regular season run came to an end last week with a pair of back-to-back losses to Central Catholic and Parkland.
The Hurricanes (8-2) won their first eight matches of the season, including a sweep over Freedom last week, but saw that come crashing down in four game losses to the Vikings (9-1) and Trojans (9-0)
Head coach Connor Swigart hopes the grind of last week can be lessons moving forward.
“It was a grueling week for us with three good opponents,” he said. “I was hoping going into the week that we would figure out more about our team and we did just that.
“We lost to a very good Central team but we couldn’t seem to get out of our own way. It was very sloppy but it was good for us to see that if we continue to play that way wins against good teams will be hard to come by. The girls had a great response on Wednesday against Parkland. It was an electric atmosphere in Memorial Gym against one of the best teams in the state. Even with the loss it was a match that proved to our girls that we can hang with anyone albeit we bring our best effort.”
Luckily for Liberty, this week’s slate of three matchups should make them feel better, as they have East Stroudsburg North (4-8), Dieruff (0-9) and Wilson.
Swigart is hoping the favorable schedule can give them some time to hit the reset button heading toward the home stretch of the season.
“It’s getting to the dog days of the season,” Swigart said. “Everyone is a bit tired, sore or mentally fatigued. The players and teams that can move past that and get better in practice are going to be the ones that are hanging around a month from now when playoffs begin. We continue to build connections with Lora and our new hitters. They have shown a lot of progress over the last month and I am excited to see the progression as they keep getting extra work.”
Freedom (6-5) and Bethlehem Catholic (5-4) are both battling for playoff spots, as they enter this week.
The Pates lost to Liberty and Emmaus last week to set them back, but have another tough week with Pleasant Valley (11-0) and Nazareth (7-4) on tap this week.
The Hawks are looking to keep their heads above water with Stroudsburg (3-10), Easton (7-3) and Nazareth this week.
