Liberty’s girls soccer team held off Pleasant Valley for 73 minutes, but the Bears were determined to tie the Hurricanes near the end of regulation before winning, 2-1, in double overtime on Sept. 19 at Liberty.
“Anytime there’s a lot of emotions in a game, whether it be Senior Night, or a rivalry game, or you’re off your routine, it makes for heavy affairs. Sometimes a lack of continuity is not for the best. I think the emotions in this case were tough, yeah,” said Liberty coach Andrew Uhler. “We have no choice but to learn from it and put it behind us.”
It was, in fact, Senior Night for Liberty’s Hannah Oliver, Natalya Teran, Jazmine Cato, Payton Davis, and Valentina Morales.
Adrianna Grello scored the Hurricanes’ goal in the eighth minute, and the Bears had trouble responding until the second half, as if on a mission.
“The tides were turning in the sense that we weren’t really rising to that same occasion,” said Coach Uhler. “We were too chaotic in terms of our passing, and movement, and we weren’t really retaining possession.”
Pleasant Valley took three consecutive shots on goal in the 46th minute, but Liberty’s defense kept every attempt away from the net.
“We did a great job. The post was on our side, so we had our 12th man in the post there a couple times,” Uhler said. “Sometimes those bounces in those situations go our way, and we have people clear lines, and we did a really good job defensively in that scenario. It’s just unfortunate we couldn’t take advantage and capitalize in those situations.”
From there, the Bears maintained possession and took three shots on goal, but in the last 15 minutes of regulation, it was the Hurricanes who pressed for more offense.
But in the 73rd minute, Pleasant Valley’s Aryn Stivala connected on a ball that found the back of the net to tie.
In the first overtime, Liberty forward Jazmine Cato took a shot to the top right corner that looked promising but missed.
Then, in the second overtime, Riley Green took two consecutive shots on goal that failed when Morgan Ryals finished the job for the Pleasant Valley victory.
Liberty goalie Angie Carvalho made 7 saves on 9 shots.
Pleasant Valley goalie Sadie Rizzo made 4 saves on 5 shots.
