FHS looks to get back to winning ways
It’s going to be a push to the end of the season for Freedom’s field hockey team if they want to solidify a spot in the District 11 postseason.
The Pates (5-6-1) have lost five of their last six games, including a tough 2-1 loss to East Stroudsburg South over the weekend, but head coach Chelsea Quinn knows the only thing her team can do with six games left on the season is to take things a day at a time.
“We made a point to start the season taking things one step and one game at a time, instead of focusing on the big picture,” said Quinn. “We dropped a tough one against ESS on Saturday and are looking to bounce back, seeing them a second time around this week. The girls know what’s on the line, and we’ve done everything we can to prepare, we just have to finish on corners and our opportunities to score in the circle and get the job done.”
Freedom took on the Cavs (6-7) on Tuesday, past Press deadlines, in a pivotal rematch for both teams playoff aspirations. They finish the week off with Easton (10-1) and Northern Lehigh (0-10) with a chance to get back to .500.
After starting out the season hot, Quinn wants her group to focus on what they can handle in each contest the rest of the way.
“After we got a couple big results we needed early on, we’ve been locking in on reaching a bigger goal of ours, which is getting back in the playoff picture,” she said. “Now that we’re closing in on the final stretch, knowing that playoffs are within reach, we’re trying to capitalize in the games that will get us there.”
Liberty (5-3-1) comes into the week coming off two wins last week over Pleasant Valley and Bethlehem Catholic where they outscored their opponents 14-0.
Now they face a huge week of four games on the slate with Stroudsburg (4-4-1), Emmaus (10-1), Saucon Valley (2-6-2) and Hazleton, as they look to solidify their postseason lives sooner than later.
Bethlehem Catholic (1-10) looks to snap a six-game slide with a showdown against a winless Pocono Mountain East (0-8-1) side on Tuesday. They close out the week against Whitehall (3-5-1).
