The Salisbury field hockey team split a couple of nonleague games over the past week as the Falcons battled through their regular season schedule.
At 3-3-1 in the Colonial League and 5-5-1 overall, the Lady Falcons have hopes of reaching the postseason in both the league and district playoffs. The exciting part of the equation is that the team is playing well with some young players stepping up. The roster has seven seniors and one junior with the remaining 14 spots being filled by sophomores and freshmen.
On Friday, Salisbury downed Kutztown 4-0 as sophomore Sarah Beckage led the way with two goals in the win and classmate Kendra Morgan added a goal. The final goal in the win came from freshman Ellie Schneider.
The following day, the Falcons made a trip to Lehighton (7-2-0) and fell in a 2-1 game. Maya Afif, the lone junior on the team, scored in the third quarter to put the Falcons on top, but Gabby Brown added two late goals for Lehighton to get the come-from-behind win.
Salisbury has made life tough on some of the better teams in District 11. In addition to the 2-1 loss to Lehighton, who will be joining the Colonial League next season, the Lady Falcons played Southern Lehigh (7-0-0, 7-1-0) tough last week before falling in a 2-0 loss. It was just the second time this season that the Spartans have been held to less than three goals in a game, with Northwestern Lehigh (6-1-0, 6-1-0) being the other team.
The rest of the schedule has Salisbury facing all Colonial League teams with a combined record of 24-20-3 in league play. Within their division, the Falcons face Saucon Valley, Moravian Academy, and Southern Lehigh for a second time after having gone 1-1-1 against those three teams in their first meeting. In the next week, Salisbury plays Saucon Valley (1-3-2, 2-4-2), Bangor (5-2-0, 5-2-0), Pen Argyl (2-3-1, 3-4-1), and Palisades (0-7-0, 0-9-0).
