Fifty citations issued in aggressive driving detail

In the final scheduled aggressive driving enforcement detail of the summer, Salisbury Township Police stopped 46 vehicles along South Pike Avenue Sept. 21. The roadway is notorious as a dangerous traffic safety location as motorists ignore speed limits on the uphill grade over South Mountain.

Fifty citations were issued during the surveillance operation 6 a.m. into the afternoon hours. Fifty citations were issued: 31 for speeding, with two top speeds of 74 and 78 mph in a posted 40 mph zone. Six tickets for seat belt infractions were issued, three for suspended or no driver’s license infractions and one citation for a red light violation, along with several other miscellaneous violations.

One driver was charged with fleeing police, receiving stolen property and for a drug charge. Officers from Upper Saucon Township, Emmaus and Allentown assisted in the pursuit and apprehension of the fleeing driver.

The aggressive driving details are sponsored by grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, to pay for overtime duty for officers participating, so no township police funds are diverted from regular scheduled patrol duty.

While this is the final aggressive driving blitz of the year, traffic safety patrol officer Bryan Losagio said “officers will continue to enforce safe driving measures during routine patrols. Keeping our roadways safe is one of our top priorities and we will continue to work hard to do so.”
