PHS pounds Liberty, prepares for Nazareth

The Parkland and Liberty High School football teams met on the gridiron in week three of the regular season, both undefeated in a big matchup. The Trojans scored 35 first-half point on their way to a 42-14 victory over the Hurricanes in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action last Friday night at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.

“Liberty is always a tough week and our players saw that right from the start,” said assistant coach Mike Facchiano. “We also had unforced errors and penalties stall us at first. Once we began to execute our jobs, you saw our productivity increase.”

Parkland scored six touchdowns over the course of the game, four of which came thanks to the legs of Trey Tremba. The senior running back ran for 222 yards and had two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, including a 93-yarder before halftime. He had both TDs in the opening quarter and then the first and third of three Parkland scores in the second.

“I cannot say enough positive things about a person like Trey Tremba,” Facchiano said. “He is a student-athlete who shows in the classroom, in the weight room and on the field that his work ethic sets him up for success.

“However, Trey will be the first to tell you that his production was a byproduct of the work and effort put in by his offensive line. Kale (Kumernitsky), Russell (Clark), Mason (Marcks), James (Tyler) and Ali (Wezza) provided him with the lanes he needed and protected Luke for the passing game.”

Connor Johns caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Luke Spang in the second quarter in the middle of the two Tremba rushes. TJ Lawrence capped off the Trojan scoring with a five-yard run in the third quarter.

Up next now, Parkland returns home for the first time since week one and welcomes fellow unbeaten Nazareth (3-0) on Friday night. The Blue Eagles have a high-powered offense that has averaged 47 points per game over the first three games, defeating East Stroudsburg South, Emmaus and Freedom.

“Nazareth does an excellent job forcing you to defend the entire 53 yards of the field,” said Facchiano. “They are a spread offense that will put their athletes in position to have success. They can go fast with their tempo and have a talented defense that can cause problems with various pressures. They also have seasoned leaders like (wide receiver Mason) Kuehner, (two-way lineman Sean) Kinney, and (tight end/defensive back Frankie) Mroz. We need to play assignment football. We need all 11 guys on the field doing their job and flying to the football.”

The winner this weekend puts itself at the top of the conference standings and in the driver’s seat.
