The Northwestern Lehigh cross country teams competed in last weekend’s Centaur Invitational at DeSales University. The Tiger girls team took ninth place at the meet, while the Northwestern boys team finished 13th in a field of over 20 teams.
Junior Sophia Cornell led the way for the Tiger girls team, finishing 26th overall in 21:57.2. The rest of Northwestern’s top five included senior Haley DuBois (46th), junior Megan Fornwalt (63rd), junior Kellcey Pedron (66th) and junior Devon Heinly (85th). Senior Katie Griffith (86th) and sophomore Ava Smedstad (111th) were also part of the varsity line up at the invitational, which drew 162 runners in the girls field.
In the boys race at DeSales, Northwestern juniors Xander Giandomenico (31st in 18:37.9) and Greyson Wellings (44th in 19:10.2) led the way, followed by senior Sean Kershner (51st), freshman Brady Furman (99th) and sophomore Jonathan Fornauf (118th). Junior Bryce Thrash (125th) and senior Tyler Lehr (135th) were also part of the Tiger boys varsity line up at the meet, which included 211 boys runners.
Twin Valley won the boys team title with 98 points, followed by Boyertown (150), Milton (170), Tamaqua (207) and Upper Merion (241).
Milton senior Ryan Bickert won the boys individual title in 16:33.0, while his teammate junior Rex Farr finished second in 16:48.2. Palmerton’s Connor Hibell was third in 17:11.7.
Phoenixville took first place in the girls team standings with 29 points thanks to four runners finishing the top 10. Southern Lehigh (94) was second, followed by Central Bucks West (130), Mechanicsburg (138) and Stroudsburg (141).
Moravian Academy sophomore Virginia Kraus won the girls race in 18:40.9 with a large lead over second-place Avaline Fihlman (19:53.2) of Freedom.
Kraus, the defending state champ in Class A, has won three invitational races over the first three weekends of the season, including her team’s Lion Invitational as well as the Northampton Invitational and now the Centaur.
