Field hockey looking for more wins

Catasauqua’s field hockey team had begun the season with some balanced scoring, but the Rough Riders need to balance their scoring with victories.

The Roughies have posted victories over Wilson and Bethlehem Catholic, and they will begin this week with an overall 2-6 record.

First-year head coach Amanda Freiler has maintained a positive outlook.

“We have had goals scored from six different players so far,” said Freiler. “Our girls have worked hard, and you can see a difference. We lost a heartbreaker last week to Salisbury (4-3) in overtime. It was a great game, but unfortunately, the calls didn’t go our way.”

Abby Antipas is the team’s leading scorer with six goals and five assists. Jordan Soltis has three goals and four assists.

Goalie Sophia Becker has 110 saves and also has scored two goals. The senior also has an optimistic outlook.

“The season is looking very promising,” she said. “Our team is heavily dominated by seniors, with six starters and four senior captains. We also have a few key freshmen that have played huge offensive and defensive roles.

“Because this is our first season with coach Freiler, many of us are still adjusting to her style of teaching. We’re really trying to focus on playing as a team instead of a group of individuals this year as well. Things are already looking a lot brighter for us this season.”

Becker has seen plenty of specific signs of progress. The Roughies will travel to Palmerton Tuesday, Palisades Thursday, and host Saucon Valley Saturday.

“We were able to score against Palmerton and Northwestern this year, and they were both practically untouchable last year. I’m very excited to see how our season progresses, and how our players continue to grow into their roles on the field.”
