Tom Repasch opens Hi Neighbors series Sept. 18

The popular speakers program offered by First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, “Hi Neighbors,” starts its fall series of programs on Monday, Sept. 18. The programs are offered at the church building, 2344 Center St., Bethlehem.

Hi Neighbors offers an interesting schedule of local speakers who share their interest and passion for topics like music, history, travel and wellness. The programs are open to all, and there is no fee or preregistration.

Each session begins at 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall with a social time. The presentations begin at 10 a.m.

The 10 scheduled programs run through Monday, Nov. 20:

Sept. 18: Tom Repasch presents “Banned in Berlin: The Story of the Last Great Performers in Nazi Germany.” The Comedian Harmonists was one of the most successful musical groups in Europe before World War II – an all-male German close-harmony ensemble that performed from 1928-34. In November, a new musical comes to Broadway about this group and its fate in Nazi Germany, with music by Barry Manilow.

Sept. 25: Larry Oberly shares the interesting history of cement production at the Atlas Portland Cement Co., from its humble beginnings into the largest Portland Cement company in the world.

Oct. 2: Peter Newman offers a visit back to the turbulent ’60s – the music, the people, and the many important events during that decade.

Oct. 9: As a follow-up to their presentation last spring, the staff at Meals on Wheels will provide a tour of their East Allentown facility. Hi Neighbors participants can meet there or make a reservation to ride the bus from First Pres (limited seating; RSVP to info@fpc-bethlehem.org or 610-86-5865).

Oct. 16: Many ancestors came to the U.S. through Ellis Island, and Dr. Brian Alnutt from Northampton Community College provides a history of this facility and its role in our country’s growth.

Oct. 23: We all do it daily, but how much do you really know about it? Dr. Micah Sadigh shares insights into “Sleep and Dreams.”

Oct. 30: Deb Mellish from the Catasauqua Preservation Association presents the story of “The Ironmen of Catasauqua.”

Nov. 6: David Macbeth, First Pres’ Director of Music Ministries, takes participants on an armchair travelogue with stories and images from his family’s summer trip to Germany.

Nov. 13: Take a trip through each room inside (and outside) our homes with AARP’s Jennifer Maloney, who will provide tips and strategies to make those spaces safer, for folks of all ages – AARP’s Home Fit program.

Nov. 20: David Macbeth returns with his vocal students from Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts, for a special musical presentation.
