LHS girls tie Bangor
Liberty’s girls soccer team played to a 0-0 tie in their season opener against Bangor on Aug. 26 at Liberty.
“They were excited on Saturday. They came to play. They were hungry,” said Liberty coach Andrew Uhler. “We lost to Bangor last year, 1-nil, in overtime at Bangor, so the girls were hungry to not repeat some of that, and ultimately, I think we were the better squad. We just came away with not putting some chances in the back of the net, but still, a tie is great considering where we were with them last year. It was a nice little redemption piece.”
Still hungry for a win in their conference opener on Aug. 29, the Hurricanes shut out Pocono Mountain West, 6-0, at Liberty.
Megan Goodman scored the first Hurricane goal of the season in the fourth minute on an assist by Natalya Teran.
“Till you get that, it just felt really good in the moment,” Goodman said. “We needed to keep building off of that.”
Goodman then had an assist on a goal by Jalyn Reeves, who scored another goal seven minutes later.
“I think playing through balls were really helping us today and taking good touches and sending them to our teammates,” Reeves said. “Our communication, our movement on and off the ball created a lot of space and knowing each other and where we want the ball.”
Pocono Mountain West keeper Jenesis Bermudez made 16 saves in the match, some on one-on-ones as Liberty charged the goal.
“Often, I think we took too many touches in toward goal, which made it good for an aggressive keeper like her to come out and address it, and I think the lesson is find that middle ground where we’re not taking too ambitious shots from too far out; also not getting too close in. Find that sweet spot to be able to put it without the keeper being able to react,” said Coach Uhler.
Goodman’s goal to the left corner was Liberty’s fourth of the match on an assist by Reeves.
“We needed to play more simple, I think, in this situation,” said Goodman. “They were definitely pressing on us and making sure they were containing us.”
In the second half, Bermudez made a nice save off a corner midway through the period.
The Panthers had two consecutive scoring opportunities when Isabella Caliguiri was wide open, but her shot went high and wide. Then, Madelyn Krisch dribbled in from the 40 but couldn’t convert.
Soon after, Liberty’s Emilya Teran took the ball from the 25 on a pass from Andrea Ramirez and scored in the 67th minute.
Natalya Teran took advantage of Bermudez coming out of the box to score the Hurricanes’ sixth goal two minutes later.
“I waited for the open space for the defender to open up, and I found her,” said Teran, a senior. “I think my last four years we’ve improved a lot and have a lot more communication and connection through the whole team, so I think we can get a lot farther than we have in the past.”
