LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Football falls to BC

Twenty unanswered points in the third quarter did the damage in Whitehall’s 34-21 loss to Bethlehem Catholic on Sept. 2 at BASD Stadium.

The Golden Hawks led 14-7 at halftime after the Zephyrs made two attempts to tie before time ran out.

On the second attempt, Whitehall quarterback Trey Dogmanits’ third pass was complete to Talon Dogmanits for a first down, but Becahi’s Ariel Awuah intercepted Dogmanits with 24 seconds left.

The Hawks proceeded to score three touchdowns in the same manner, quarterback Cayden Vassa to wide receiver and brother Carter Vassa, all in the third quarter.

While Becahi coach Ty Ward acknowledged the Vassa to Vassa connection, the Hawks’ first-year coach recognized the talent of Trey Dogmanits.

“That kid is a great athlete, and we knew he was gonna be hard to manage from his legs. We thought if we could stop the run, which we did early and try to make them throw the ball downfield, it was gonna be difficult on them,” Coach Ward said. “If they had to go 10 or 12 plays down the field, it’s very difficult. If they had to get one or two big plays, then they can score a lot faster. Our job was to try and make them not have big plays, understand that Dogmanits is gonna run a little bit and make some stuff happen with his feet.”

With two minutes left in the third quarter, Dogmanits threw to Baden Bashore for a first down, and Dogmanits ran the ball for another first down before being intercepted on a pass intended for Jack Kocher.

Late in the fourth quarter, Talon Dogmanits ran for 58 yards on a pass from Trey Dogmanits for the Zephyrs’ second touchdown.

On the game’s opening drive, Becahi’s Jacob Sutton went 80 yards to put the Hawks on the scoreboard.

Whitehall responded with a beautiful Dogmanits pass to Bashore in the end zone to tie, but Becahi took the lead when Cayden Vassa ran the ball eight yards for a touchdown.

This Friday, Whitehall is scheduled to host Easton, led by former Zephyr coach Matt Senneca.
