CHS honors HOF class

For Matt Andrews, it was a moment that brought back a plethora of memories.

“When Tom Moll emailed me the news a few months back, it was pretty overwhelming and emotional quite frankly,” said Andrews. “An avalanche of memories came over me at once. Playing at Catasauqua High School meant everything with me growing up there.”

Andrews was one of four new inductees into the school’s Hall of Fame during a ceremony at halftime at the recent game against Palmerton Sept. 1.

Along with Andrews, Robert Leggett (Class of 1959), Amanda (Gerhard) Blume (2008), and Hannah Edwards (2016) were inducted.

Andrews was a four-year letter winner in baseball and football. He was a first-team Colonial League defensive back in 1996 and a member of The Associated Press First Team in ’96 as a defensive back. Andrews went on to play at Lehigh University, where he was a three-year starter at free safety and an All-Patriot League defensive back in 1999 and 200, and an Academic All-American in 2000.

He cherished his moments in the Brown and White. He played on teams that won five championships, one being a state baseball title in 1997.

“Playing on as many championships, especially during my senior year, was unprecedented,” he added. “None of it would have been possible without tremendous teammates, athletes, and coaches that I was very lucky to be around and play with all those years ago.

“Tradition and community pride at Catty was number-one back in those days. And that started with all those guys and girls who came before us in the 80s and early 90s that we grew up watching. We had tremendous respect for them and wanted to be better than them.

“We wanted to make them proud.”

Leggett was a letter winner in basketball and baseball and was Lehigh Valley League First team selection in both sports in 1958 and ’59. He went on to play at the United States Coast Guard, where he became their all-time leading scorer in basketball. Leggett also pitched a no-hitter against MIT in 1960 and was inducted into the academy’s Hall of Fame.

Blume finished her career with 14 varsity letters. She was a Colonial League Girls Soccer First-Team selection in 2006 ’07, and ’08. Gerhard also was a PSCA All-State and a NSCAA Regional All-American in 2007 and ’08.

In addition, Blume was a member of league championship teams in 2006 and ’07, and a district championship squad in 2007. She finished her career as the all-time leading scorer in District XI history with 152 goals.

Blume also was a district track champion in the 100- and 200-meter dash in 2007. She went on to play soccer at Virginia Tech, where she played in 88 career games and four NCAA tournaments as well as being a team captain in 2012.

Edwards was a four-year Colonial League softball first-team choice and an All-State selection (2013-16), She also was the Pennsylvania Class 2A Softball Player of the Year in 2015 and ’16. Edwards also holds state career records in hits (207), stolen bases (57), batting average (.651), and on-base percentage (.696).

The Lehigh graduate also was a 2016 PGF High School All-American and a 15-time All American through USA Today, MaxPreps, Flo Softball, and PGF.

For Edwards, it has been a gratifying experience.

“It was a really humbling experience to be honored along with other Catty greats,” she gushed. “Sports always have a knack for bringing people together. The best part of the night was having my entire family come together to watch it happen and spend some time together.

“I am truly grateful for the honor and everything that growing up in Catty has molded me into. The way Catty puts community and tradition at the forefront of everything it does is really something special.

“I am so proud to be a Rough Rider and wear the Brown and White.”
