Barbara Ann McCarthy

Barbara Ann (Brogan) McCarthy, 83, of Orefield, died Sept. 3, 2023.

Born in Queens, N.Y., she was the daughter of James Brogan and Elsie Smith.

For more than 60 years she was the loving wife of Thomas McCarthy Sr. who died Sept. 16, 2022.

She worked for Air Products and Chemicals for more than 30 years, retiring from the International Law Division as an executive legal assistant.

Before that, she was a legal secretary for Wally Webster Law.

She graduated from Grover Cleveland High School, New York City, N.Y., and later attended Claremont Secretarial School.

Her love was immeasurable and she will always be remembered for her warmth and her selflessness.

She had the most amazing recipes (lemon meringue pie and her chocolate chip cookies were family favorites) that will be shared for years to come by her children and close friends.

She valued time with family and friends more than anything, and looked forward to the annual end of summer trip to Kentucky and Ohio, accompanied by her sister Betty (and usually a couple grandchildren) to visit her cousins, who were like sisters to her.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children Tom Jr. (Shelly) of Audubon, Jim of Hellertown, Kerrie Armbruster (Mark Happel) of Allentown, Suzie (Mike Vilcheck) of Slatington, and Justin (Heather) of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren Kyle, Jessica (Zach), Kiersten (Nick), Jacqueline, Ryan, Patrick and Christian (Nicole), Autumn, Luke and Zoe; great-grandchildren Kaedyn, Logan, Avery and Lily; sisters-in-law Cathy Kammerer and Patti Taibe (Art); brother-in-law Al Pruss; and numerous nieces and nephews, extending several generations.

She was predeceased by her loving sisters Betty McGrath and Eleanor Pruss, with whom she shared a very strong bond.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Sept. 11 at St. Joseph The Worker Roman Catholic Church, 1879 Applewood Drive, Orefield.

Friends and family may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday and 8:45-9:45 a.m. Monday in Stephens Funeral Home Inc., 274 North Krocks Road, Allentown.

Interment will be private in Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
