Yard sale benefits library
The Public Library of Catasauqua, 302 Bridge St., Catasauqua, held a yard sale at Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua. Its major goal was to raise funds necessary for the library, particularly a new book drop box.
Library Director Kath Morris and library board Chairwoman Barb Roth said they were pleased with the steady stream of people who shopped at the event. It offered a wide array of household items, clothes, kids’ toys and more. All purchases were by donation.
A food menu included a variety of choices, such as pork barbecue (the best seller), hot dogs with sauerkraut, chips, baked goods, water, iced tea and coffee - also all for sale by donation. The volunteer kitchen staff was busy making food for the many hungry, enthused customers.
Proceeds from this fundraiser are earmarked for any items the library needs, but the purchase of a new outside book drop box is the priority. An outside free-standing drop box can cost from $300 to $3,000, based on a variety of factors. The amount of funds raised may dictate the size and quality of the drop box purchase.
The main social hall at the church served as the principal sales area. The kitchen is located adjacent to the social hall and was brimming with happy volunteers laboring to cook and serve menu items. The clothing for sale was stocked in a separate room, as were the children’s toys and games.
The entrance area was staffed by Janice Lathrop, a Catasauqua community volunteer and library board member, who provided attendees with a welcoming smile and a plastic bag to place their purchased items in. Lathrop said she was happy with the turnout.
Randy Schoenberger sat outside prior to visiting the sale. He noted he is a Holy Trinity member and admires the community spirit of the congregation and its pastor.
The sale, by all measures, was a success, as evidenced by the church, library and community support.
