Pickleball at Bicentennial Park

Looking to get some recreation in? Look no further than the new pickleball and tennis courts at Bicentennial Park in East Allen Township.

Chuck Frantz, township recreation director, reported these courts have been around for just about five weeks. He is working now to get the word out, so residents of East Allen and beyond can fully enjoy the new facilities.

According to Frantz, the installation of the courts took place after a request by the township residents.

A basketball court was also built on the site.

There was an existing tennis court that was resurfaced and paved. A fence was also constructed.

The cost for the work totaled about $60,000.

Frantz said the township is looking to host clinics for people who want to learn pickleball.

All ages and skill levels can participate in the sport, which reportedly has been around since 1965.

Lori and Tom Fox said they discovered the courts when they were bicycling along Bicentennial Park. They said they were not aware of the court’s completion and always wanted to play pickleball. They were intrigued and came back to start trying it out. They said they enjoyed the experience and plan to become regulars.

Bob and Karen Bydlon, of Hokendauqua, said they had been playing for a few years, and when news of the East Allen courts came to them, they decided to try them. They said their travel time from Whitehall was worth it.

Frantz said additional improvements are planned at Bicentennial Park. In 2024, the township is looking to construct a new pavilion and playground. The new pavilion should be able to hold 100 people; the existing pavilion can hold 80, at most.

Bicentennial Park is filled with many opportunities for all ages, Frantz said.

A soccer camp runs in June and July for seven weeks. This summer, more than 150 kids participated. There is also a soccer program in the spring and fall.

Every fall, the park hosts a cross-country meet in which 45-plus schools participate.

A lacrosse camp also takes place. More than 150 kids attend.

Frantz said since the inception of this park in 2002, many improvements have been made to meet the community’s needs.
