LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Former fire chief remembered

A moment of silence was observed for former Upper Milford Western Dist. #1 Fire Company Fire Chief Ira Shade at the Aug. 17 Upper Milford Township Supervisors meeting. Shade died Aug. 15.

A dedicated member of the community, he had also been a fire warden, wildland firefighter and a life member of Macungie Fire Company.

As a follow-up to the July 20 workshop on the needs of Western District Fire Company, Fire Chief Mike Kline invited Bill Wall and Curt Sandee of Valley Builders to address questions pertaining to the proposed new building. Supervisors heard how different options, from types of buildings to locations, with preliminary budgets for the various scenarios, had been examined over the last 10 months.

The proposed site plan, off Chestnut and Powder Valley roads, is for a stand-alone structure. Reviewing details on how the building would help the needs of the firefighters and structurally accommodate the tanker the fire company wants, Wall and Sandee went through a breakdown of what the budgetary costs would entail.

The Fields at Twin Run development project was again discussed for nearly 30 minutes. Supervisor John D. Zgura repeated his concerns, first raised at the Aug. 3 meeting, about children playing in the area after hours.

From the possibility of getting ill from runoff water to tampering with the irrigation system, Alan Fornwall from Keystone and Robb Werley of Robb Werley and Associates LLC did their best to address the concerns raised by supervisors.

The meeting ended with no consensus on how to move forward on the issues raised.

Township Solicitor Marc Fisher confirmed the recreation committee will soon be presenting the board with a proposal detailing a procedure allowing a resident to donate a tree or bench, in honor or memory of a resident of Upper Milford. Once finalized, the details and a form will be available on the township’s website.
