SP Biddy team wins another league crown
It was not easy, but South Parkland won the Lehigh Valley Biddy League baseball championship this summer, the second straight summer championship for the program. It was not an easy road to the title as the Trojans had to overcome some early season losses. Head coach Aaron Markowitz described the up-and-down season.
“It was quite a journey,” said Markowitz. “We came into this season with high expectations since we won a championship in a different league the past spring. On top of that, we were by far the youngest team last spring, so now being an older and more mature team, that added even more pressure.
“We started off very strong winning a preseason tournament, which was an additional target on our back. Entering league play, though, we hit some early season hurdles and lost three straight games by a combined total of four runs. However, the coaches used this as a learning and growth opportunity and the team didn’t get down on themselves, committed to keep working hard, and continued to push each other to improve. We got on a roll then in the postseason and cruised to the championship.”
According to Markowitz, the core of this year’s team has been playing together since the spring of 2022 and have played around 80-90 games with each other. Even in the offseason, the group does winter workouts and training sessions, along with team bonding events. The coaching staff also plays a huge role in the success as they dedicate a lot of their time in workouts and on the field.
South Parkland was the only team to go through the playoffs undefeated, going 4-0. The Trojans averaged scoring 15.75 runs a game while only giving up six runs. The team hit .516 with a 0.633 OBP, finishing with a 19-7-1 overall record.
With the on-field success, it was up-and-down the lineup that contributed.
“It’s very difficult to name just a few players,” Markowitz said. “This was a complete and total team effort throughout the entire season. If you named our top hitter, top fielder, and top pitcher, you would name three different players. Further, you would get different names if you asked at different points in the season. I think that was actually one of the main strengths of the team: they truly played as a team. When one player was down, another would pick him up. Everyone filled the role they were asked too and gave it 100 percent without complaining and any type of ego. The players were each other’s biggest fans. Couple that selfless attitude with a lot of talent, and that was the foundation of this championship team.”
