VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Assist with literacy activities in a kindergarten or first grade classroom in the Allentown School District one hour per week or more during the school year. Clearances and orientation hosted by Allentown School District Foundation required. Adults only. The first orientation is scheduled for 1-2 p.m. Sept. 8 at Hays Elementary School, Allentown. The Great Allentown Fair is coming up and Civic Theatre of Allentown would like to utilize community members to help us fundraise by directing people where to park their cars. Shifts are only two hours long, noon to 8:30 p.m., Aug. 30 through Sept. 4. Minimum age to volunteer is 16 or 13 with adult. Contact Anthony Rizzudo at 610-432-8943 or adminasst@civictheatre.com.

Drivers are needed to transport families from congregations to a day center 6 a.m. each day and then back to their congregations 6 p.m. for Family Promise of Lehigh Valley clients. The vehicle is a 14-passenger van and no special license is required. Congregations are all within 30 minutes of the day center located at 1346 W. Hamilton St., Allentown. Make sure people have food to eat - volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Pick up meals from one of eight sites in the Lehigh Valley and deliver to homebound seniors and adults with disabilities. Deliveries start 10 a.m. weekdays and take 60-90 minutes to complete. Full directions and pre-delivery instructions are provided; application and background check required. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers for a variety of tasks at the Bethlehem Running Festival Oct. 20-22. Hosted by RUNegades, Inc., the races start and end at SteelStacks, Bethlehem. India Heritage Day is a one-day celebration of multi-cultural art, music, food and fashion and will be held at the Allentown Arts Park on Fifth Street Sept. 3. Hosted by Saara Arts, volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including set up and tear down, food service, trash attendants and floaters. All volunteers must be able to work at least one consecutive two to three hour shift between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Minimum age to volunteer is 16. Can you drive to specific, local stores and pick up food donations on a regular schedule? Second Harvest Food Bank in Nazareth needs adults with a valid driver’s license who can lift up to 50 lbs. and have a vehicle capable of carrying up to 200 lbs. of food products. The Whitehall Historical Preservation Society needs volunteers to assist with their Fall Flea Market Sept. 9 (rain date September 10) between the hours of 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Help is needed with parking, setting up, cleaning up, food stand, assisting vendor and other areas as needed.
