Robert A. Hanawalt

Robert (Bob) A. Hanawalt, 79, of Emmaus, died Aug. 14, 2023, at Paoli Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Gloria (Figliolia) Hanawalt. Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late William and Doris (Cook) Hanawalt.

He graduated from William Allen High School in 1962 and the University of Pittsburgh in 1966. While in Pittsburgh, he met his wife, the love of his life. They married 10 months after meeting, April 1, 1967.

After college, he worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for eight years, mostly serving as a district manager in Ohio. In 1974 he moved his family to the Lehigh Valley. There he joined his father as a Nationwide Insurance agent and ran Hanawalt’s Insurance Agency from 1983 until retiring in 2007.

He served ARC of Lehigh Valley for 15 years as a board member, treasurer and president. He also served on the board of Via of the Lehigh Valley for 10 years.

He coached youth baseball and Special Olympics basketball.

Often described as a humble, genuine and kind man, he loved to watch sports, play golf and listen to rock ‘n’ roll. He was a true “family man” and considered his kids and grandkids to be his greatest accomplishment.

He is survived by sons, Rob (Liz) and Scott (Jill); grandchildren, Logan, Chase, Cassidy and Max, who loved their grandfather with all their hearts.

Contributions may be made in his memory, Gloria or Kristi’s and will go directly to The Kristi Hanawalt Life Skills Center. Contributions may be also made to Via of the Lehigh Valley.

A service will be held in his honor 11 a.m. Aug. 24 in the Schantz Funeral Home, 250 Main St, Emmaus. Visitation will be held 9 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
