Classical View: An early ‘Autumn‘ for Pennsylvania Sinfonia ‘Valley Vivaldi’

The third “Valley Vivaldi” summer concert previews the fall “Season.”

“I am certainly looking forward to our August ‘Valley Vivaldi’ concert,” says “Valley Vivaldi” founder Dr. Allan Birney.

Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra’s “Valley Vivaldi” is 7 p.m. Aug. 20, Wesley United Methodist Church, Bethlehem.

The concert features Vivaldi’s “Concerto No. 3 in F Major,” Op. 8, RV 293, “Autumn,” from “The Four Seasons.”

“Although it marks the near end of summer, the music is so exciting and uplifting,” says Birney.

“When we started these concerts in 1983, we did so for two primary reasons.

“First, there were very few classical concerts for audiences during the summer.

“Second, we wanted to provide our Pennsylvania Sinfonia musicians continued performance opportunities after the conclusion of our main season.

“And, I’m very pleased that these concerts have been so popular. We’re finishing our 2023 summer ‘Valley Vivaldi’ and look forward to our fourth concert in the series, ‘Winter Vivaldi,’ in February 2024.

For the Aug. 20 performance, Concertmaster Simon Maurer and oboist Nobuo Kitagawa are the evening’s featured soloists.

Given this year’s emphasis on Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” Maurer is violin soloist for “Concerto No. 3 in F Major,” Op. 8, RV 293, “Autumn.”

A second Vivaldi piece on the program is the “Oboe Concerto in A Minor,” RV 461, performed by Kitagawa.

“The music of Johann Sebastian Bach is always a favorite of the audience and Simon and Nobuo are featured in the performance of Bach’s ‘Concerto in G Minor for Violin and Oboe,’ BWV 1060,” says Birney.

“Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber is perhaps somewhat of a lesser-known Baroque composer and I am certainly looking forward to Simon’s performance of Biber’s ‘Violin Sonata No. 2, Trio Romanesca.’ We certainly have kept Simon busy for this concert.” Birney says.

The full ensemble will perform Arcangelo Corelli’s “Concerto Grosso in G Minor,” Op. 6 No. 8, commonly known as the “Christmas Concerto.”
