Memorial planned for fallen firefighters

At the Aug. 10 Lynn Township Supervisors meeting, Northwestern Lehigh Firefighter Foundation members Chad Butters and Ron Jerdon discussed memorial proposals for fallen firefighters from the area.

Jerdon explained the idea.

“The plan is to build a firefighter memorial at Ontelaunee Park and we wanted to make a formal request to Lynn Township if we could locate it at the park,” Jerdon told the board.

Chairman Justin Smith is also a member of the foundation.

“We also have reserved May 4, 2024, in Ontelaunee Park to do an appreciation day for all fire companies,” Smith said. “We have a request for the township to waive the fees for that specific event.”

The latter was granted. May 4 is International Firefighters Day.

A motion was also passed, subject to a design plan approved by the board, for two memorials at the park: one for fallen firefighters of the area, and another one to specifically memorialize fallen firefighters Marvin Gruber and Zachary Paris.

Chris Brown, landscaper/architect, who designed the Veterans Memorial at the park, is working on plans for both memorials to be presented at a later date.

In other matters, Keystone Consulting Engineers President Eric Snyder introduced himself to the board, reassuring everyone he is up to date on township-related files.

In answering a question from Supervisor Brian C. Dietrich about the company’s zoning business, Snyder confirmed they are not providing this service due to a lack of employees.

“It is very difficult to find staff,” Snyder said.

He explained not many people are qualified to due surveying and they are doing the best they can to help the township.

Jordan Serulneck of Seven Sirens Brewery Company spoke about the preliminary plans for the Seven Sirens Brewery Concert at Ontelaunee Park.

“When I grew up in the area, I always wanted to see Ontelaunee Park used to its full capacity, and it’s gorgeous,” Serulneck said.

“We are just seeking permission to use our liquor licensing, our insurance and to fund one event this year.”

Smith said the township does not permit the serving of alcohol in the park, and added the “no alcohol” policy has been subject to debate among residents, especially related to liability,

Smith tabled the issue, saying it can be revisited later by the new board.

A final reminder, Night in the Country is taking place 4-10 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Northwestern Recreation Commission Community Park, Route 309 and Northwest Road. Rain date is Aug. 20.
