Holmes, Henry reunited with the ‘Hounds
With the fall sports season just around the corner and student-athletes preparing for the upcoming school year, the Press would like to take a look back at some of the outstanding performances from area college athletes during the winter and spring seasons in 2022-23.
Bloomsburg University catcher Tyler Wiik batted .319 this season for the Huskies with a .419 on base percentage. The senior graduate student played in 18 games and made 14 starts. He hit two homes runs and drove in 10 runs while scoring five times in 2023. Over four seasons Wiik posted a .272 career batting average, .385 slugging percentage and a .391 on base percentage. He played in 80 games and made 58 starts while hitting five homers and driving in 31 runs.
Moravian University senior Derek Holmes played in 39 games and made 38 starts in 2023. He batted .356 and hit three home runs. He posted 33 RBIs, a .521 slugging percentage and a .451 on base percentage for the Greyhounds. Teammate Nick Henry played in 38 games for the Hounds this spring, batting .314 with a .409 slugging percentage and a .382 OBP. The sophomore outfielder had one home run and drove in 25 runs.
Rafe Perich started 49 games for the Lehigh University baseball team last spring. The sophomore infielder/pitcher batted .307 with 19 doubles, six home runs and a triple. He knocked in 47 runs while posting a .500 slugging percentage and .349 on base percentage. He also appeared in seven games on the mound, logging four innings.
Bloomsburg senior Sydney Derr had her career-best pole vault during her final season as a Husky athlete. Derr cleared 3.25 meters (10 feet, 8 inches) to win the Susquehanna Multi & Easter Invitational in April. Derr, who was also a member of the Bloomsburg field hockey team, won the Lock Haven Invitational this spring and was fifth at PSAC Indoor Championships over the winter.
Two former Tiger runners were part of the Lebanon Valley College track and field team in 2023. Freshman Joe Chukoskie competed in six meets and ran a season-best time of 32:32.67 for 14th place in the 10,000-meter run at the MAC Championships. He was also 28th in the 5,000 at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Championships. Junior Joe Pleban finished 17th in the steeplechase at the MAC Championships with a time of 10:40.85.
Northwestern Lehigh graduate Cole Chukoskie competed in Patriot League track and field championships during both the winter indoor season and spring outdoor season. A walk-on to the Division I Leopards team, Chukoskie finished 32nd in the 5000-meter run in the outdoor season. During the winter season Chukoskie, a freshman in 2022-23, competed in the mile and finished 21st overall.
Taylor Wikert played in all 18 games for the DeSales University mens lacrosse team in 2023. The freshman longstick middle scored five goals and assisted on seven in his first college season. He was third on the team with 55 ground balls, caused a team-high 16 turnovers and won 12 faceoffs for his team.
Wyatt Ledeboer played in all 16 games and made seven total starts for the Juniata College mens lacrosse team. The freshman totaled 20 ground balls and caused 15 turnovers, which is the sixth-most in a single season in program history.
Zach Anderson played in three games and started one for the Lycoming College mens lacrosse team in 2023. The senior has played in 13 games and made six starts over four seasons, scoring 13 goals and assisting on six for his college career.
Freshman Tess Ledeboer appeared in 13 games for the Juniata College womens lacrosse team in 2023. The freshman had eight ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Freshman Emilee Schultz played in 16 games and made 12 starts for the Kings College womens lacrosse team last season. The attacker scored nine goals and assisted on two in her first season of college lacrosse.
Luke Hallman played in eight matches for the DeSales University golf team in during the 2022-23 season. The junior shot a low round of 79 with an average of 86 and one top 10 finish. Hallman’s lowest round of his college career came in his first year when he fired a 77 against Muhlenberg at Lehigh Country Club.
Junior Gabby Smalley played in all eight rounds last season for the Arcadia University golf team. She competed in the MAC Championship, finishing 29th.
Sophomore defender Nichole Landes played in two games for the DeSales University womens lacrosse team in 2023.
