Free license plate event

Lehigh County Auto Theft Task Force, AAA and the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority will host a free event to help motorists replace peeling/illegible license plates Aug. 15

The event will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the AAA office at 2072 Downyflake Lane, Allentown.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, a license plate is deemed illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet away, or if the plate shows any blistering, peeling, discoloration or loss of reflectivity.

Authorities will be on-site to sign the applicable PennDOT forms verifying a plate is illegible at the Aug 15 event.

If a license plate meets the criteria, the form can be submitted to PennDOT and a new plate will be delivered through the mail for free.
