Fire department still protecting residents

At the Aug. 7 Macungie Borough Council meeting, council members assured residents the fire department is still protecting its residents despite the many rumors circulating to the contrary.

Macungie Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Natysyn said the fire trucks have insurance and the volunteers are ready to respond to any emergencies. A budget was established in 2023. The situation is being investigated and certain discrepancies have been found and turned over to the police.

A former fire chief talked about finances being questioned during his time in that position and the department worked with council at that time.

The Fields at Brookside was discussed including the recreation fee. The development has no room for a playground so there was talk of a waiver for the recreation fee. The original agreement did not mention this; therefore, the waiver was denied. Council voted unanimously to not consider the waiver.

Macungie Band has reached out to council for assistance. Director Gary Campbell is seeking assistance in finding a place to practice and store music equipment. The band celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2005; they are one of the few small town bands in the nation.

A major highlight for the band occurred in 1949 when Macungie Memorial Park acquired a bandshell through citizen support.

Suggestions for such a place for the band can be directed to Campbell through council member John Yerman at jyerman@macungie.pa.us.

An executive session was held over legal issues.
