Three LHS students earn scholarships
Each year, Lehigh Valley Road Runners offers four separate scholarships to eligible students planning to continue their education at the college level after graduating from high school.
The LVRR Scholarship Fund was established to assist local high school graduates with college expenses and is funded by LVRR races and through fundraising efforts of the club. This scholarship is awarded to two eligible females and two eligible males.
Recipients of the 2023 LVRR Scholarship were:
Owen Reilly (Liberty High School) attending Loyola University to major in marketing.
Jack Huie (Liberty High School) Arizona State University to major in actuarial science.
Angelina Klein (Northwestern Lehigh High School) attending DeSales University to major as a physician assistant.
Madeline Mumma (Liberty) attending the University of Pittsburgh to major in statistics.
Mumma started running at age 5 through CYO. She was top-10 in her class rank.
Her other awards included: Silver Cord for 135+ community service hours, AP Scholar with honor, 2-year Triple Crown varsity letter holder, team captain for cross country, and being part of indoor and outdoor track and field teams.
Extracurricular/Community: National Honor Society, Operation Smile, MiniTHON, Interact Club, Youth Group, volunteered with Notre Dame CYO Cross Country and Track, Healthy Kids Running Series, Girls on the Run, LVRR and the Bethlehem Emergency Shelter.
Accomplishments: 2021, 2022 EPC First Team, 2020 EPC Second Team, 2-year District 11 medalist and state qualifier, 2021, 2022 Liberty HS MVP, 2020 Liberty HS Most Improved Player, 2022 XC EPC Scholar Athlete, 2022 Liberty HS XC Scholar Athlete, 2021, 2022 Northampton XC Invitational medalist, 2021 Lehigh Paul Short Invitational medalist, 3-year track multi event District 11 qualifier, 2021 EPC Honorable Mention, 2023 Liberty HS Girls Track MVP.
Huie ran the 400, 800, 1600, 4x4, 4x8 in track and field.
He plays piano and French horn and Volunteers for: St Luke’s, Special Olympics, Liberty Soccer Club youth camps, Northeast soccer and musical.
He was a member of band, orchestra, jazz band, pit orchestra and first company.
He was top-10 percent in his class, band section leader, PMEA all-state concert band, National Honor Society, track team scholar athlete, XC state qualifier and a district medalist in the 4x800.
Reilly was a 2021 EPC all-conference selection and captain for cross country and track and field.
He is an Eagle scout, BSA Order of the Arrow, BSA national leadership training, volunteers at LVRR, Bethlehem Special Olympics, Healthy Kids Running Series, den chief for the Cub Scouts and earned the Silver Cord to wear at graduation for completing over 150 hours of community service when only 65 are required.
He was also a PA YMCA state swimming qualifier in 2016, 2018, 2020.
The proceeds of the annual Emmaus 4-Mile Classic are the primary fundraising source for both the Ed Thompson and Nicole Reinhart Memorial Scholarships.
The club’s longest-standing scholarship, The Ed Thompson Memorial Scholarship, is awarded to an eligible Emmaus High School male senior. The recipient of the 2023 Ed Thompson Memorial Scholarship was Oscar Felegy (Emmaus High School) who is attending Penn State (Main Campus) to major in nuclear engineering.
The Nicole Reinhart Memorial Scholarship was established in 2001 in memory of Nicole Reinhart, a 1994 EHS graduate, who lost her life in a cycling race in September 2000. The recipient of the 2023 Nicole Reinhart Memorial Scholarship was: Hailey Reinard (Emmaus High School) who is attending Bucknell University to major in mathematics.
Established in 2013, the Tom Illick Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a high school senior or college undergraduate, whose parents are LVRR members in good standing for three consecutive years or more. This award is a continuation of the club’s commitment to our members and its young adults to lead healthy, productive, and disciplined lifestyles. The club wants to continue to encourage their academic and community involvement as they pursue their college goals. In 2018, after the passing of longtime club member Tom Illick, this scholarship was renamed in his honor.
The recipient of the 2023 Tom Illick Memorial Scholarship was Emma Martinez (Palmerton Area High School) who is attending Pepperdine University to major in Broadcast Journalism.
