Coplay council hears public works updates

During the Aug. 1 Coplay Borough Council meeting, Paul Boyle, public works director, reported the air conditioning unit in the former Commitment to Family and Community building, 165 Cherry St., has been repaired.

Additionally, a new air conditioning unit has been installed at Coplay Public Library, 49 S. Fifth St.

Boyle also reported Sixth Street between Coplay and Chestnut streets will be paved later this fall, as will Sixth Street between Schreiber Avenue and Hokendauqua Street. Boyle also noted UGI completed its work in the borough, and any road repairs needed as a result of that work would be done during the next two months.

Discussion ensued about a recent incident at borough hall, 98 S. Fourth St., where four individuals were found trespassing in the borough building after hours. There are several groups who use the gym and rooms in the building to hold meetings and practice.

Various ideas were discussed regarding how to better secure the building. Councilwoman Janet Eisenhauer suggested a team be created to focus on this particular issue so a plan can be carried out to enhance the security.

Interim fire Chief Mark Schuster thanked Boyle and his team for redoing the lines of the bays at the Coplay Fire Department garage.

At a previous borough meeting, Tiffany Benson, borough secretary and treasurer, asked members of council to propose their ideas to adjust the current fee schedule for the borough. Council members submitted their ideas directly to Benson, and a new fee schedule has been proposed.

This new schedule will be voted on at the regular meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at borough hall.
