Dorothy Kathryn (Mayor) Zug Taylor politician; digitized newspaper circulation program

Dorothy (“Dotty”) Kathryn Mayor Zug Taylor, of Bethlehem, died July 19, 2023, at home. Born at St. Luke’s, Fountain Hill, she was a daughter of Bernadine Janie and George Mayor. She was the wife of the late Charles K. Zug III and Donald Taylor.

She was a 1954 Fountain Hill HS graduate and a 1957 graduate of St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania.

She was a visiting nurse in Philadelphia.

She started her political career in 1966 as a member of the Northampton County Democratic Committee. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee and was a party vice-chair. She led the Pennsylvania delegation at the 1976 Democratic convention. She served on the Democratic National Executive Committee. She was one of the only female electors for Jimmy Carter. In 1984, she was the first female to serve on the nine-member Northampton County Council. She led all members in votes in her 1987 re-election.

In the early 1980s she became a self-taught software engineer. She designed, wrote and executed computer programs that digitized circulation for the Globe Times newspaper, Bethlehem.

In the 1990s, she and her husband Don Taylor spent several months helping Harbour Island, Bahamas and its residents in the recovery from hurricane Andrew. They assisted businesses to automate processes using computers and software. They taught computer and coding classes to teenagers.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Zug (Bill Laycock) of Hanover, New Hampshire; a son, Marty (Becky Fair) of McLean, Virginia; a step-son, Jim Taylor (Shelley Taylor) of Pittsburgh; a stepdaughter, Mary Hudson of Ithaca, New York; a niece, Chrissy Mayor; six grandchildren, Maddie, Eliza, Briland, Calvin, Will and Amelia; and seven step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Alex, Erica, Casey, Nelson, Chris, Eleanor and Calvin.

She was predeceased by son, Charles K. Zug IV.
