Waves fall to Macungie
The Whitehall Waves summer swim team hosted the Macungie Bears on July 11, the last meet of the regular season.
“My stars have really been excelling, Kendall Bashore, Derek Bashore. The Makhouls have been doing well for the times they’ve been able to be here,” said Waves coach Daniel Jablonski. “I’ve seen a lot of good swims from the Giedls. Kyra improved a lot in butterfly and freestyle this year and dropped three seconds in butterfly last week and has been doing well since then.”
Although Macungie won the meet, 331-250, Waves swimmers celebrated season’s end by pushing Jablonski into the pool, and the head coach swam a lap to show his team how it’s done.
Top performers for Whitehall’s girls were Kyra Giedl in the 13-14 50 freestyle (29.91) and the 50 butterfly (32.90), Neave Doyle in the 15 & Over 50 free (28.25) and the 50 backstroke (32.35), Riley Bashore in 8 & Under 25 breaststroke (24.75), Lexi Penn in 11-12 50 breast (42.15), Greta O’Brien in 13-14 50 breast (40.81), Jazmyn Burak in the 9-10 25 back (21.00), and Kendall Bashore in the 11-12 50 free (27.09) and the 13-14 100 free (1:00.38).
“Lexi Penn did well this year as well. She dropped a lot of time,” Jablonski said. “Vicki Streat is a hard worker and has been dropping a lot of time from last year too, and the Quaches have always been pretty steady contenders for me.”
Whitehall’s boys winners were Johnny Stinner in the 13-14 50 free (27.27) and the 50 fly (30.44), Aaron Stinner in the 15 & Over 50 free (23.03) and the 50 fly (24.72), Joseph Trinkle in the 8 & Under 25 back (23.84), Alex Madden in the 15 & Over 50 breast (31.28), Xavier Makhoul in the 11-12 100 IM (1:30.22), Mazin Makhoul in the 9-10 25 fly (18.81) and the 25 free (16.22), Derek Bashore in the 11-12 50 fly (36.28) and the 25 back (17.50), Griffin Werner in the 11-12 50 back (44.19) and the 50 free (31.90), and Owen Trinkle in the 8 & Under 25 free (19.64).
Cory Sommers, Jazdiel Avrelo, Griffin Werner, and Micah O’Brien combined to win the 11-12 100 medley relay for the Waves (1:14.68).
In the boys crescendo relay, Joseph Trinkle, Cory Sommers, Gabe O’Brien, Johnny Stinner, and Derek Bashore missed first place by .13 seconds with a time of 2:04.19.
Two postseason meets lie ahead for the Waves: the Silver Championship Meet, which will have been swum on July 19, and the Gold Championship Meet, which will have been swum on July 22.
“It’s always really lovely to coach new kids into the sport and see them develop a profound sense of enjoyment of the sport,” Jablonski said.
