Moore falls in state playoff tourney
Moore Township’s second outing in the PA Connie Mack State Tournament resulted in a late-inning 4-2 loss to Harleysville and eliminated the Redhawks from further competition on July 23 at Limeport Stadium in Coopersburg.
“Of course, we come in every game expecting to win, but we’re also very realistic in our expectations, and you’re missing a couple guys, you’ve got guys hurt playing through injuries, and I couldn’t ask for any more out of this group,” said Moore Township manager Jarad Haupt. “Again, they came out and just battled.”
The Redhawks sat on a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryan Lambert’s two-out RBI single put Harleysville on the scoreboard.
Moore Township’s big first inning started with Billy Stuhldreher’s leadoff triple followed by Austin Sommers’ RBI single down the third base line.
Tommy Hensel’s base hit got Sommers to third, allowing Sommers to score on a bad pickoff throw to first base.
In the top of the third inning, Gabe Sanno had a two-out single that fell in short center; then got caught in a rundown and landed safely back at first base after jumping over the tag of Vince Noble.
Aidan Sugra made a tough catch in right field that was Harleysville’s second out in the bottom of the fourth.
A scoring opportunity presented itself for Moore Township in the fifth inning when Tommy Hensel had a leadoff walk, stole second, and then stole third, but the Redhawk third baseman was left stranded after two strikeouts and a ground out.
Harleysville tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan Davis scored on a wild pitch, and Ben Miller’s two-RBI double to deep left field ended up being the game winner.
Pitcher Owen Stanchock delivered three strikeouts and threw a complete game for the Redhawks.
In spite of the Redhawks’ elimination, Coach Haupt was proud of his players’ accomplishments this summer.
“To lose eight starters to Legion, kids that aged-out from last year’s team, and bring one [starter] back, do you expect to make it back to the state tournament? I don’t think so,” Haupt said. “That’s our goal, obviously, but just to be here and for these kids to experience it, I’ll take it. We’ll stick it in our pocket and run with this one forever too.”
