Eric Wert definition of an all-star
Eric Wert is known for his prowess on the football field and talents on the baseball diamond, but the multisport athlete is also pretty good at flying drones.
As a certified drone pilot, Wert has parlayed his skills to be a sports and real estate videographer. It’s not something that every high school senior has on their resume, but it’s part of what makes the Bethlehem Catholic star unique.
It’s just another checkmark for the future Seton Hall baseball player and all-time receptions leader in Becahi history that signifies his array of talents.
The multisport EPC all-star in football and baseball has enjoyed a stellar career at Bethlehem Catholic and comes away as Bethlehem Catholic’s Male Athlete of the Year.
Wert’s senior season had its share of ups and downs, but ultimately, he was able to compete in district championships in both football and baseball.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to grab a gold medal, as the Hawks lost to Central Catholic 14-3 in the District 11 4A football championship and the baseball team fell to Blue Mountain 11-1 in the 4A finale.
“I enjoyed the different mentality each sport had to offer,” said Wert. “Both football and baseball teams went to the district finals and we were one game away from states. Playing in those games were my favorite memories from this season.”
During his tenure at Beca, Wert went through three different football coaches, two this past season when head coach Kyle Haas resigned abruptly late in the year. It could have been a derailing affect for the program, but the Hawks battled to the district finals, only to come up short against the Vikings, a team they beat two weeks earlier in the regular season finale.
He finished his career with a school-record 102 receptions to go along with 1,256 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was a first team EPC recipient his junior year and a second team member his sophomore year.
Wert then transitioned to baseball, where he’ll continue his athletic endeavors at the next level. He had 86 career hits at Beca, 39 RBIs and 47 stolen bases.
He took home first-team EPC honors the past three seasons, which is a rare feat to accomplish.
While the Hawks weren’t able to hold off Blue Mountain in this year’s district final, he still relishes his district gold medal from his sophomore campaign.
“We hoped to have a better outcome in this past year’s district final, but it didn’t work out,” Wert said. “My sophomore year, we weren’t expected to be that good, but ended up having a great year and went to the state playoffs after winning districts. My all time favorite memory at Becahi was winning the baseball district championship game my sophomore year.”
With high school behind him, Wert hopes that he left a positive impression among his peers, as he heads to Seton Hall to study business and marketing and hopefully expand his drone services.
“My four years at Becahi were filled with great memories and great friends,” he said. “I hope I’m remembered as a great teammate and friend. Becahi has a long history of great athletes and I’m hoping in the future my name can be thrown into the mix.
“My goals moving forward in life are based off a single principle and that is to be successful in anything I do.”
