National Night Out Aug. 1 in Emmaus
The village of Emmaus is celebrating the founding of Emmaus, Pa. July 29. The actual founding was July 27, 1747. Two of the founders who donated approximately 100 acres of land for the development of the village are celebrated at this event. In particular they celebrate the generosity of Pennsylvania Pioneers Sebastian Knauss and Jacob Ehrenhardt.
The celebration will be held at the Emmaus Moravian Church, 146 Main St., Emmaus, in the Fellowship Hall. The celebration begins 5:15 p.m. The 1803 House, museums and historical societies are hosting the event.
The celebration includes music, dinner, birthday cake and a presentation by Joshua Fink. For information and to see if tickets are still available, call 610-967-4401.
The Emmaus Police Department will hold a Family Fun Night for National Night Out 6-8 p.m. Aug. 1 at 400 Jubilee St., Emmaus. Meet the Emmaus police officers, firefighters, EMTs and paramedics and tour their fire trucks, ambulances and police vehicles. The Lehigh County Drone Team will conduct a demonstration and the Midget Race Cars will be presented.
The Coalition for Appropriate Transportation will provide bicycle safety and education and a limited amount of youth bike helmets. Children and adults may also bring their bikes for safety checks by CAT’s instructors.
The night will include visitors from many local community groups, including Reach LV Youth Recovery Center, Emmaus Arts Commission, Environmental Advisory Council, Kiwanis Club of Emmaus, Emmaus Rotary Club, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. The Emmaus Police Department will also celebrate K-9 Ronnie’s final demonstration before his retirement this August and will introduce their new K-9 in a special guest appearance.
DJ Dutch will perform live music and the police chief and other staff will participate in a dunk tank. Hot dogs and Rita’s Ice will also be provided.
The Woman’s Club of Emmaus invites all Pinochle and Bridge players to their dessert card party 1 p.m. Sept. 7 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 501 Chestnut St., Emmaus. There is a cost for this event which is the major fundraising activity for the club’s scholarship program. There will be delicious desserts and prizes. The Emmaus Historical Society and Museum, 218 Main St., is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Stop by for a visit and learn more about this history-filled community.
The historical society will not have a membership meeting or program in August but there is still so much to see and do. Stay cool by visiting the museum Saturdays and mark your calendars for the Emmaus Heritage Festival, Sept. 16 on the grounds of the Emmaus Historical Society. This is a great chance to learn about and celebrate Emmaus’ heritage.
The society is selling Dan Schantz Monthly Madness Cards. Stop in the museum Saturdays to purchase your cards or call the museum to place an order at 610-966-6591. The cards do not expire. You can use them until every month is crossed off. Cards will also be available at all society sponsored events.
The society’s museum committee appreciates all donations of memorabilia that came from, was used or enjoyed by those in Emaus/Emmaus. The 2023 Emmaus Summer Entertainment Series is still rocking on. There are three more “Tunes in the Triangle” concerts, with Island Time performing July 28, Kyle Yankowy Aug. 11 and Audio Files Aug. 25. The concerts are held 6:30-8:30 p.m. There are also performances 6-8 p.m. Sunday evenings at Emmaus Community Park. Band of Brothers will take the stage July 30, DMC Duo will perform Aug. 13 and Tookany Creek Bluegrass Band will follow Aug. 20. All concerts are free, but donations are accepted and the concessions stand will offer refreshments for purchase.
The Emmaus Public Library is partnering with the Emmaus Garden Club to hold a flower arranging workshop for children in third through fifth grades. The event will be held 2-3 p.m. Aug. 3 and is limited to 12 attendees. Registration is required, so visit eplkids@cliu.org, call 610-965-9284 or sign up at the desk.
NASA Solar System Ambassador Marty McGuire will visit the Emmaus Public Library 1-2 p.m. Aug. 5. The afternoon will include a fascinating program about space travel. Marty is nicknamed “The Backyard Astronomy Guy” and is very knowledgeable about modern space travel tech, solar system exploration and deep space telescope research. The event is open to adults, teens and children 6 and up. Please RSVP using one of the methods listed above.
Local artist Drew Tilton will host a watercolor workshop Aug. 12 at the library. The workshop is available to any beginner or intermediate artists ages 16 and up and is free and open to Emmaus residents and nonresidents. There is a 15 attendee limit, so RSVP via https://tilton-watercolor.eventbrite.com. Printed tickets are not necessary to attend and the organizer will have a guest list at the event.
The library and the Lehigh County Conservation District are organizing a “Buckets Full of Nature” Biodiversity Day 2-3 p.m. Aug. 16. School aged attendees will discover the science of biodiversity and the connections of life. The event will bring nature into the classroom to spark interest in science and exploration. Free notary services are now available at the library for residents of Emmaus, the Borough of Macungie and Upper Milford Township. Appointments are open every 15 minutes 4-6 p.m. Thursday evenings. Call the library at 610-965-9284 to schedule an appointment and mention the type of notarization you need. The visitor requiring a notarization must be physically present before the notary at the time of the notarization. Please bring a valid photo identification to your appointment, such as a driver’s license, government issued nondriver ID card, passport or other form of government identification. Any identification must be current and include a signature or a photograph. The signer should complete any blank spaces on the documents before notarization and their original signature is required. All documents must be in English. For more information on witnesses and documents unable to be notarized, go to emmauspl.org/notary.
The zoning hearing board will meet 7-8 p.m. July 26, the community garden commission will meet 6-7 p.m. Aug. 8 and the planning commission will meet 7-8 p.m. Aug. 10. All of the links and information for borough Zoom meetings may be found at emmauspa.gov/Calendar.aspx.
The next Emmaus Borough Council meeting will be held 6-7 p.m. Aug. 21 at the temporary borough offices at 420 S. 10th St., Emmaus and via Zoom.
Come support local agriculture and businesses 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday at the Emmaus Farmers Market in the Emmaus Triangle. The markets are held rain or shine, with many different vendors, all from Pennsylvania and located within 75 miles from the market.
