NASD plans orientations, teacher hires for new academic year

Plans and schedules for the start of the 2023-24 academic year in Northampton Area School District are being set.
The first day of school in the NASD will be held 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 28 for the elementary schools and Northampton Area High School but is set for 7:20 a.m.-2:30 a.m. Aug. 28 at Northampton Area Middle School.
The NAHS open house for students is set for 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Aug. 24.
Teachers will start earlier. NASD teacher induction is planned for 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 7-9, and NASD in-service days are 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 21-24.
NAMS sixth-grade orientation is set for 9:30-11 a.m. Aug. 14-16, and the NAHS new student orientation will be 10 a.m.-noon Aug. 18.
Northampton Borough Elementary Schools’ kindergarten meet-the-teacher night is 4-6 p.m. Aug. 23.
Lehigh Elementary School’s kindergarten orientation and new family orientation are both 5-7 p.m. Aug. 23.
George Wolf Elementary School’s kindergarten orientation is planned for 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 23.
Northampton Borough’s first-grade meet-the-teacher night will be 4-6 p.m. Aug. 24.
Moore Elementary School’s new family and kindergarten parent orientation is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Aug. 24.
Picture days at NAHS will be Aug. 29 and 30.
The board of education voted 7-0, with two members absent at the July 17 meeting, to approve the hiring of nine teachers:
• Ian Luberti, business, computer and information technology teacher at NAMS, effective Aug. 21, at $59,655, with benefits
• Harry Schwartz, special education teacher at NAMS, effective Aug. 21, at be $69,331, with benefits
• Adriana Huaman, kindergarten teacher at George Wolf, effective Aug. 21, at $58,855, with benefits
• August Chien, long-term substitute English as a second language teacher at NAMS, effective Aug. 21, at $62,003, with benefits
• Carly Suarez, long-term substitute first-grade elementary teacher at George Wolf, effective Aug. 21, at $58,855, with benefits
• Jacqlyn Mondschein, fifth-grade elementary teacher at George Wolf, effective Aug. 21, at $82,494, with benefits
• Dana Alyse Schaffer, special education teacher at Lehigh Elementary, effective Aug. 21, at $71,688, with benefits
• Kaitlin Sauerzopf, fourth-grade elementary teacher at Lehigh Elementary, effective on or before Sept. 18, at $68,368, with benefits
• Emma Garneau, fourth-grade elementary teacher at Siegfried Elementary, effective Aug. 21, at $58,855, with benefits
The board of education also voted 7-0 at the July 17 meeting to approve the hiring of four staff members:
• Jennifer Edwards, study hall instructional assistant at NAHS, effective Aug. 21, at $18.88 per hour, with benefits
• Joshua Deutsch, technology technician and assistive technology assistant, as of Aug. 8, at $30.03 per hour, with benefits
• Elizabeth Leibenguth, cafeteria monitor at NAHS, effective Aug. 28, at $18.63 per hour
• Katie Peluszak, 10-month secretary at NAMS, effective on or about Aug. 14, at $25.54 per hour, with benefits
In addition, the board of education voted 7-0 at the July 17 meeting to approve the George Wolf summer book library program Title I family engagement event, the list of summer library workers and their compensation for the Title I family engagement program. Salaries were paid through a Title I grant.
New substitutes will be paid one day’s substitute wages for the completion of required training to become a substitute for the district, effective Aug. 1.
The school board is next scheduled to meet 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 in the NAHS auditorium, 1619 Laubach Ave.
