Making music
Tempo in musical terminology is the speed of the pace of a given musical piece, usually measured as “beats per minute.” Presto indicates being faster, and allegro connotes joy in musical parlance.
A short but clearly up-tempo inaugural summer music camp was held July 10-14 at Holy Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church, 604 Fourth St., Catasauqua. The camp was memorable for the about 30 youngsters and their parents and grandparents who attended.
Benjamin Becker, camp director and church community music liaison, was energetic and delighted with the success of the camp. He was especially impressed with the variety of students from several school districts and music instructors from different schools.
Becker is optimistic this is a camp that will grow in popularity year after year.
On the final day of camp, students entertained their family members in the main portion of the church July 14. The music they played near the church’s alter blessed the room with heavenly sounds, it was mentioned.
Instructors included Robert Arnold, band teacher in the Catasauqua Area School District; Kendra Saunders, a Gockley Elementary School teacher; Mike Fister, a music teacher from Northampton Area School District; Crissy Kemmerer, a Parkland School District music teacher; Patrick Kersaen, Moravian University music assistant; and Doug Kaetz, professional musician and Moravian University graduate.
As the camp closed, Becker thanked the parents and grandparents for working to develop an appreciation of music in its many forms in their children. He expressed gratitude that so many campers attended and informed them they are invited to attend the summer music camp in 2024.
The week flew by quickly for both the students and teachers - as an example of presto - and was permeated with the glow of allegro with a palpable feeling of joy.
